Dana 44 ?

OK. I have an 87' bronco II and I just got a dana 44 and a 9 inch from a 79' F150 to through under it. Now that the US government has blessed use with tax returns I can finally rebuild them. So I want to run 5.38 gears which is actually, 5.38's for the 44 and 5.42's for the 9 inch. I've been told that seen as how it is pushing the border of .05, I should go with a different ratio. Though the truck will never so the pavement I do have the stock drive train (weak!)
Second, I am wanting to put a locker with a new, stronger carrier in the dana 44. The guy I am trying to order them from is telling me that the axle is too weak for a locker and I need to go with a Detroit truetrac. I really don't want to be doing any fancy brake work to get the front end to lock up. I would love to run 37's and I've been told that the axle can hold then ever with a locker, but I think that would be pushing it. But I have come to reality and realized that I might have to run 35's which is ok too.

I would have to disagree with that statement cuz I used to have a 83 fullsize bronco 302w,auto,38x15 gumbo mudders, ttb dana 44 front axle and a 8.8 rear axle and I didnt break either of them.
got offroad?

The gear ratio difference is not an issue. It is not enough to cause a problem.
If you only plan to run a single locker I would recommend putting it in the rear. The front axle will be strong enough in all but the most extreme cases, but off-road performance will be far superior with he locker in the rear rather than in the font.
