2002 blazer grinding going up hill , stops when shift into 4-hi or ...

Problem ...
When im driving uphill the transfer case starts grinding , stops when i shift into 4 hi , but if i go back into 2wd right away it starts grinding again . If i drive it a few miles the drop it into 2wd , it stops , but will pick up later . Or sometimes if i come to a complete stop , it will clunk , then i can go , but it will eventually start again .
Is it the vacuum actuator , the actuator switch , the encoder motor , a bad hub , any suggestions .
Is there a way to completely disable the transfer case from wanting to shift by unplugging the vacuum actuator or another method , to start testing to see if it does it again ?
