Does anyone know of a compatible engine swap for a 1988 Mitsubishi Montero Sport? It has a 4 cyl 5 speed, I'm hoping to drop in a 6 cyl. Any help appreciated, thanks

That's some uncharted territory for me. I suspect you would need to swap the engine, tranny, and transfer case. I don't know of any adapters for this vehicle.

Do you think a 6G72 Mitsubishi engine which is a 3.0L 195 hp V6 engine size 2972cc for the 1988–1997 Mitsubishi Montero will fit in the 1988 Montero Sport which has a 2555cc engine. I was also looking into the 6G73 Mitsubishi engine which is a 3.0L 161 hp V6 engine size 2497cc 1990–2002 for the Mitsubishi Diamante. If I transplant both the engine and transmission and have an adapter plate machined do you think a transplant would be possible? thanks

Like I said, I have no idea. It's totally unchartered territory for me. I have no idea what the input shaft spline count and size is of your T-case...or for that matter what the output shaft of the new tranny would be. Sounds like you may have some research to do.

My buddy had a three-door '88 Montero. I remember replacing the clutch in that thing for him. Monteros are really solid vehicles - especially those years.
They did offer a 3.0L V-6 in '88, but the transmission was different. Regardless, the Mitsubishi V-6 only put out something like 20-30hp more than the 2.6L four-cylinder, so staying in the Mitsubishi family doesn't really make a lot of sense.
Instead I'd be looking for a Mitsubishi Starion (aka Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth Conquest in the States) with the turbocharged 2.6L engine. These engines put out a ton more power than the normally-aspirated truck engines and with some minor tuning could outclass your stock 2.6L by over 100hp/100 lb-ft. Best part is it's a bolt-in swap (well, minus the exhaust and turbo plumbing). Just make sure to grab the wiring harness and computer from the Conquest.
Otherwise, consider a GM Vortec V-6 at 190-200hp.

Cool thanks for the info I will be keeping an eye out for a conquest donor, but I do also have a 1994 Chevy astro which has a vortec with only 100K. Is this a difficult swap? Is there a 5 spd transmission that will be compatible with the vortec and my transfer case?

transfer case is not adaptable as far as im aware i have swapped the motor and trans from a 86 max to a 88 dodge raider and the transmission is shifted thru the transfer case assembly sorry best bet is to get a trans and case from a donor chevy
