The next rifle ime looking at is a springfield armory M 14, in .308 what ive read says that there are some moa or sub moa rifles that can reach out and touch to 1k yards, way i figure, if i cant see it, i wont shoot it, but there are some accurised Remington 700's out there that started life as bone stock rifles. BTW, a .338 Lapua has boucoup terminal energy out to 500 plus yards. order of over 1,000 ftlbs...dang. get the new Remington catalog and there are information pages on the different ammo they produce. Look into deltaforce.com for some ahhh...interesting shotgun loads. luck to ya!

Hee Hee Hee Guns are kool.A great rifle to shoot at long distances is a Remington 700 BDL bull barrel in .223 cal. You can't beat an out of the box Remington for price and accuracy!! Also you can get bulk ammo for it at a better price then other ammo. It's the same stuff our boys are killing torrorists with overseas. As for shotguns Remington are great too.

A friend of mine was telling me the other day that some co. in Mexico was producing a 12ga round that was almost half the length of a standard round. Meaning you could load twice the shots into your magazine. I took his word for it as he is a little on the creepy side when it comes to a passion for firearms lol! Anyone heard of something like this? I would definitely invest in some for the Home defense aspect of my shotty

You can do a .308, which is a nice load, or a 30-06. But if good old plinkin, target accuracy is what you want to hone. Caliber is irrelevant. You can work on those skills with an entry level 10-22, made by ruger, Savage, or Marlin. Ammo is cheap, they are fun to shoot, and you can get all kinds of cool accessories, without draining the budget. Now if you plan to possibly do some hunting in the future...well then maybe you should buy a larger caliber. But heck....y stop at one??

True enough Dave, i guess i need to ask you guys where do guys go for long distance target shooting. An outside range i assume? What is a respepectable distance to be shooting targets, 100 yards? I don't think i need to be shooting soup cans a mile away but it just seems like a such a fun thing to do, looking thru a scope and hitting targets and far distances. Not really planning to go hunting.

Well then a nice ruger 10-22 would work for you, and you can dress em' up pretty nicely.

Manon, in order to decide what rifle you want, you need to decide on a couple of factors first. First should be whether you will ever hunt with the rifle or not, if you will then you need to decide what the smallest to largest game you will hunt with the rifle will be. If you decide to hunt anything from deer to moose, then .270 or 30-06 will be the cartridge of choice. Secondly, how far do you plan on trying to be accurate with the rifle? My range up here in Wyoming goes out to 1000 meters, and with my plain-Jane .270 I have spent enough time at the range to know that if it is in my sights up to 600 yds, it's a dead duck. 600 yds is shooting pretty far too. Any further and you start getting into special home grown loads for accuracy and what not. This gets pretty specialized and expensive. For shooting over the 600 yard mark, I love to shoot my Sharps (repro) in 45-70. It has a 28" barrel and vernier sights and is the most fun weapon I own. It's a big, heavy, hard hitting, expensive to shoot gun though. So again, this is all going to depend on you, the reason you want to shoot it, and how much money you want to spend. Like I said earlier, if you are going to hunt, then stay with the .270 or the 30-06, or even a lever action 30-30 for that matter. The lever action 30-30 will out perform any bolt action rifle in .270 or 30-06 up to 300 yards now since Hornady has introduced the LeveRevolution line of ammunition. If you're not going to hunt with the rifle, then there is really no reason to go with a "hunting" rifle. If you just want the gun for target shooting, and plinking, then you should really look into a .17, 22 long rifle, 22 mag or a rifle chambered in .223. These rifles will all get out to 200 yards, some quite a bit further. They will all also be way less expensive to shoot. Now, any rifle chambered in .223 is going to be pretty pricey because they are all modeled after military weapons. My choice would be a 22 long rifle to start with if I weren't going to hunt with it. If you do decide to get a hunting rifle, then I would look at a Savage or a Ruger rifle. Winchester, while being known as the rifle of the west, is not known for the quality it once was. After 63 or 68 (can't remember right now) they went into mass production on an assembly line and got away from the hand assembly that made them famous. In the "gun nut" circles, modern Winchesters are not spoken of very nicely. Remington, while still being known for producing quality rifles, has become very overpriced in my opinion. If I were going to buy a Remington today, the shotgun would be the 870 express magnum and the rifle would be thier base line 700 chambered in .270 with a synthetic stock. I would not buy a Remington though, I would spend my money on a Ruger or a Savage. Both of these gun makers have been around a very long time and both are known for great quality at a decent price. Rugers' reliablity and strength are legendary in gun circles. Both will deliver great consistancy right out of the box and deliver years of exceptional service as well. In my opinion, there is not a better "bang" (pun intended) for your buck out there than Ruger firearms.

Well, if that's the case, in my opinion there are two options. A bolt action .17HMR, or a lever action .22. I have both, and they are so much fun to shoot. Though I would have to give the edge to the lever action 22 because there is just something cool about working that lever in between shots that makes you feel like John Wayne. Either caliber will serve you well and you won't be able to wipe the smile off your face.

Rugers Rule! my .357 stainless GP100 has worked flawlessly for over a decade of full house 158 grain loads, and hasent shot loose. there are some slugs avail for smoothbore smokepoles like the 870 etc. remington or winchester has a new interpretation of the minnie' ball, supposed to be spot on at 50 to 100 yards. Remingto has a new hoem defence load of duplex shot in #4 and #6 load...whatever those sizes mean. 00 or 000 ought buck IS rather too much for home defence, penetration n all. my .223 shot smooth and didnt kick, and ammo was kinda cheep. mossberg has 'Defender" line that has some interesting shortys
