I have started shopping for a rifle, was thinking about a 30-06, but don't know if there is any brand that i should stay away from, wanted a bolt action cus it seems more fun to shoot that style. Also have a question about rifling in the barrel, does it matter what style i get?
Also had a shotgun question, it's been years since i have been shooting with you guys but i do remember Kevin's shotgun was pretty fun and accurate but can't remember what brand it was.

Winchester & Remington are know for producing quality rifles. I am partial to the Winchesters myself. Most any rifle will have a "rifled" bore, unless it is a shotgun...but some of them are rifled now.
Just remember Bryan...you get what you pay for in the end. Quality rifles are better in accuracy, and you want something to last through the ages.
As far as shotguns....there is a huge spectrum of good shotgun makers...But if you got the "cheddar", you can't go wrong with a Bennelli!

Oh and what do you guys think about scopes, i am partial to Nikon cameras since i own two and they make rifle scopes, unless there is something i would be better off spending my money on.

Ive got a mossberg 500, short barrel and a modified or rifled long barrel. i dunno an ex navy seal i worked with messed with it a while back. great shotgun, there is much better out there but it gets the job done

I have never shot a Mossberg but I they are known reliable shotguns. Here is my Remington 870. It has an 18" replacement barrel, Knoxx SpecOps recoil reducing stock with the Knoxx PowerPack, magazine extension, red dot reflex sight, and Hogue black rubber foregrip. She is a little over dressed but tons of fun to shoot.
Sorry I just love posting pics of her! I think she's beautiful...
With the recoil reduction stock it is no problem for the wife or 11 y/o brother to shoot comfortably. Makes Slugs feel like target shot!
But if I had the $$$ I would go with a Saiga

No budget yet, but i think in the $300 range would be a smart buy for both rifle and shotgun ($300+ each). Have aan ad on craigslist where i sell sidework and that is where the money for something like this would come from. I have known the Remongton and Winchester name sincei was a kid but i know there alot more out there.
Have you guys been watching that show on the history channel with R. Lee Ermey called lock n load. Love that show, he spends an hour talking about the heistory of a specific type of weapon, pretty cool stuff. That is where i got my passion back for guns, haven't really done much since i bought my .380 from Dave a couple of years ago.

Really? I have seen Remington bolt action 30-06 w/syntetic stock go for about $320

Another question, since my main goal is targets at a far distance (i'm not ready for competition but would like to get into that eventually) is there a better caliber for long distance target shooting? I like the way a 30-06 shoots with the sound and the force i feel in my shoulder (i like feeling the power of the round) but is there a better caliber for less kickback and more accuracy? Maybe even cheaper ammo to boot would be a nice touch.

That's just the rifle.. I'd spend at least another 200-300 on the scope, but that's from a guy with a 1200 dollar scope
I've heard 30-06 is a great cartridge, I'm a 308 guy though because I can run it in different fire-arms..
here's my baby..
remington 700 police, chambered in 308, with a leupold mark 4...
