I have a 87 Ranger w/ V6 auto. The 4x4 seems to work just fine, but I hear a "click" that speeds up with the RPM's.
What the heck is this "clicking"??? thanks...steve
Oh yea... I have the push button, not manual hubs.

It's TTB, so neither.
Quit driving down the road in 4wd, they don't like that. Try it off road and see if it still makes the same ticking sound.

Heck if I know... You guessed it, I am new to all this. The front axle has a differential and on the right side there is a short drive line with a U Joint. I see a "boot". What the hecks under this rubber? Feels solid. On the left can't see anything since its all enclosed. and then there is a "yolk" at the front wheels that engages the power to the front wheels..
Everything seems to work OK. In Hi and Low, power to front wheels OK. Push buttons are inside the cab, just above the rear view mirror.
Just hear this clicking/ light clunking sound when i am running down the road. This is my FIRST 4 wheel drive... so gots lots to learn. thanks...
Guess I should buy a book or is there a web site? For all us newbies/ dummies.

What is TTB? What is stand for?
This truck only has 41000 actual miles. I am 2nd owner. I know 1st owner well, so I know history of truck since it was purchased new locally. Truck is in almost MINT condition.. Not beat up or abused.
When you say, to take it off road... just down a dirt road OK. Also I live in snow country, so could wait until it snows. Thanks for help. Steve

clicking noise is commonly associated with parts that should be lubed. lube all bushings in that general area including the forward drive shaft. if that doesnt help you may have to remove your hubcaps as they to make that noise lol

TTB = Twin Traction Beam, the type of front suspension your Ranger has. As opposed to SLA (A-Arm) or Solid Axle.
Generally speaking 4x4's don't like being driven on pavement and have a tendency to bind up. Try it on a loose dirt road and report back.
It's totally possible that what Blazer said is correct though. While your mileage is low the age isn't and the lubed parts such as bushings and u-joints could have dried up by now.

Thanks guys.. will do as you suggest and report back. Appreciate the help.
One other thing I had thought about is jacking the truck off all 4 wheels and then putting it 4WD to see if I heard sound. What do you think?

Well... worked on the truck. Took off the beauty rims and hub caps. Pulled the front tires. Checked all around, fluids, grease...etc. Turned the hubs by hand. Everything seems look ok and no noise. No loose play on hubs..
Took the truck out on a dirt road. Still can hear tick tick or a click click (speeds up w/ rpms). But this time I think it is coming from the transfer case.
Will get under truck this morning and check transfer case.

I take it that it doesn't tick in 2wd? Check the u-joints on your front drive shaft.

Thats a good one on the zip ties. Thats a good joke, gotta do that to one of my buddies..
Only ticks/ clicks in 4 wheel drive. both in high and low range. No noise in 2 WD.
I did a visual inspection under the truck. Everything looks OK. Checked the drive line and u joints. No loose play.
