"In 95 they lowered Jeep closer to ground to make it more Yuppie friendly in emergency maneuvers and give it a softer ride."

In 1995 it was still a YJ.  there is no 1996 and in 1997 they built the first TJs.  they have these things called options when you buy a vehicle.  you can buy one with tiny donuts and made for commuting if you wish. or you can buy one thats locked and loaded from the factory. Heres a stock rubicon for reference.  4.11 gears, lockers, dana 44s, 31" mts, 4-1 transfer case, 4.0 Inline 6 engine.

"It has turned into a fat bloated 4x4 car and likely more."
Please look at the picture above.

"Sure you can spend thousands to beef it up and raise it and put on real steel bumpers and regear it too"

I didnt spend thousands and mine came with real steal bumpers from the factory.  have you seen the CJ bumpers??? there not heavy duty in fact they look an awful lot like mine on the TJ

" with a old CJ from 60 and 70's you did not have to do that because they were simple and sturdy and did not come with tall car like axle ratios either."

A major reason why they didnt have high axle ratios is because the motors had waaay less power.  you need those low gears to keep you moving.  once they dropped a V8 in the CJ7 they raised the axle raios.  and in the YJ they used high axle ratios as well.

mine came with 3.73s and you can get them with 4.11s. from the factory.

Good argument but dog does not hunt. What real steel you have ion bumper is very thin and do not forget plastic end caps too. Again on gears, it is not as you claim, they started gearing them tall to try to squeak a little more MPG out of them for yuppies so they could sell more of them without dragging down fleet averages. That is why gears are taller. (it is not just Jeep though because even 4x4 30 to 40 years ago used to come with good serious axle ratio standard and even deeper available on option unlike today. Sure you want to be proud of your ride but to suggest it is a tuff as many years ago is pretty silly because it is not. Marketing pressure of push a Jeep into a market that it was never meant to fill has morphed it into a 4x4 car clone with cheaper parts to improve profitability. Glad you like newer ones as someone has to because I sure do not.

snoman, your yuppie argument doesn't hold water, you are embarrassing yourself. if you prefer the cj series that is fine, but you cannot deny the off road capability of the tj, if you do you are an idiot.

uh im sorry im not a jeep guy at all and havn't been around jeeps much, but comeone snoman im shcoked that you would argue against this tj, its just as sturdy, better axles and of course the main reason why the tj is so capable, the legendary 4 link coil suspension!!! the nice ride is just a side effect of better articulation, tractaction, etc.....

actually the steel bumpers on the tj's are quite heavy, I was very suprised at the wieght of them when i removed mine in favor of a homemade front and a warn rear. mine got wacked many times pretty hard before i managed to bend the front. I tied it to a tree in an attempt to bend it back out, it wouldn't budge without horsing it.

hey snoman man consider this lets say you wanted the durability and ruggedness of the solid front axle and leaf springs under your burb with the smooth ride of the ifs under the front of your k3500 what would you do? dicth the front leafs and put on a four link/coils right? isn't that just what jeep did with the tj?? just as rugged with better suspsnsion and ride whats not to like???

same bumper as the CJ as far as strength or lack of it.  as far as plastic end caps.  dude 4 screws and they are gone.

yes MPGs and lack of power were a problem. solved by evening out gear ratios and adding better more powerful motors like we do today.

" Sure you want to be proud of your ride but to suggest it is a tuff as many years ago is pretty silly because it is not."

Please tell me how a CJ is more tough already.  plastic exterior parts and higher gears dont change anything about the toughness of the vehicle. especially in a jeep.

" Glad you like newer ones as someone has to because I sure do not.  "

its fine that you dont like them "just because" but to call something a yuppy mobile, car, and weak.  when it clearly isnt is just lame on your end. especially when your the only one stating it.

Sounds to me that snowman would rather have seen the Jeep just fade out of excistance instead of changing with the times.  All auto manufactures have to go where the market tells them to.  Otherwise they would be out of business.  As with everything times change and so does material.  As I said before I've never driven a CJ or YJ but I can tell you this I am no yuppie for owning a TJ.  Please name one offroad vehicle on the market that has not changed with the market.  Bet you can't find one.  I'm no expert but I think the "Jeep" CJ's, YJ's and TJ's are all the best off-the-shelf offroad vehicles ever made.  They were made with off pavement driving in mind, first and foremost, comfort has always been a distant second.

So are the CJ's that have been upgraded to 4-links are those yuppie mobiles?
The JK the best jeep ever?  I don't know but I'd be atleast willing to give it a try and not count it out because it's new.
