Hi, I have a 82' chevy k20 with 4in of lift ,33in tires, a 350 , sm465, np 205, a 10 bolt in the front and a 14 bolt sf in the rear . I have the rpo code that says it has the standard gear ratio.so i pulled the covers and counted the teeth which came out to 42 on the ring and 13 on the pinion which =3.23.I've never heard of this gear ratio.I  want to use the truck as a dd summer and winter and a bit of wheelin on the weekends.I have friends telling me that 3.23 gears will be fine for all of that. I think it will lag power and 4.10s will work better and i don't go on the highway that much anyway.Their telling me that with 4.10s the truck will be at 3,500 going 55 down the road and my that my gas mileage will drop to 4mpg. what do you guys think?

Thru barbarian math you can figure this out. What are your RPM's now at 55.Take 4.10 and divide by 3.23 =1.269 Take this # and multiply it by your rpm reading at 55 and this will be your rpm's at 55 with 4.10's. I like mine around 1800 to 2000 at 55. Keep us posted.

Hi I could do all of the math for you, but I don't need to, I have a 83 with an sm465, np205, 4.10 axles, and 33" tires, it is a perfect match. It creates a final drive ratio in high gear that puts cruising speed just over 2000rpm, and a first gear thats not too high for starting from a stop, witch leaves the granny gear for crawling. As for mileage mine is a 4door with a small block it gets 12-14 mpg on the highway. if you still want to do the math Randy's Ring & Pinion has a calculator on their web site just for this kind of question.

Thanks for the input,That gives me a general idea of what to do, I'm going to keep the 3.23's until they blow and put 4.10s later.

i need some help if one of u can help me heres the deal i just bought a 78 chevy 4x4 it has a newly rebuilt 30 over engine with headers and a 650 cfm  quadrajet carb and flow masters the thing runs great sounds good looks good ok heres the problems when u first put it in gear and take off its really sluggish till u get about halfway through first gear<its an automatic 350th i believe>then it gets a little better the when it shifts into 2nd and third its fine at u know ahh 30-35-on up to 55-65mph even when i kick in the passing gear it runs great plenty of power now im thinking it is mismatched as far as gear ratio in the rearend i dont know exactly what it is but if it were 373 could that possibly be the problem maybe i should put 411 in it? or could it be something wrong with the torque converter?  but it doesnt overheat it runs great its a great truck except for theres no power taking off and its 4x4 that what i want is lowend takeoff power ,i mean when i put it in 4low it seems alittle better but still couldnt pull a greasy string from a dogs ass any help would be appreciated i love the truck its all original but i got to get some more lowend torque
