Trans let go in the Ranger on Saturday. I've been expecting it. It started going down hill in Pismo when I couldn't get any power down and the truck wouldn't even move the tires in 4hi if I was on a slight incline. The Tuff Trucks we just couldn't get any power down at all, worse than normal. Drove it to Cleghorn and the trans was banging and slipping in the 1-2 and occasionally 2-3 shifts. Pulled it out Saturday to drive while my F1 was in the shop and it felt like it was starting in second. Then it started slipping real bad between shifts and slammed into 3rd hard. By this  time I was on the freeway, the O.D. light of doom came on (flashing OD) and wouldn't shift into 5th. Pull off the freeway and have only 3rd and 4th gear. Limped it the 5 miles home that way and parked it.

So... who's up for swapping a tranny!

so what type of Tranny are all the cool Ranger kids running these days.  I remember reading something about C5.  Is that an auto or stick?

C5 is an auto. It's the 4wd variant of the C4. They are a 3 speed with no over drive. Pretty much bullet proof but you can ask Josh how much fun they are on the street.

Nope. With any luck it will never be a "trailer queen". If I lose the streetability it will take away a lot of its charm. At that point I may as well have a no frills race truck. What good is having a truck that you can't drive to and from the trails?

Besides, with a C4/5/6 I would be limited to about 60mph, or need different rear end gears and a lot more power. And the cost of the swap would be pretty high considering I would need a new computer, new bellhousing, new transfercase, new driveshafts, and the trans its self.

I don't want to put a lot of money into this because A) I don't have it and B) It's going to get a V8 someday which will need a different trans anyway.

So it's stick with a 5R55E for now.
