Hey guys. I just picked up an 02 durango with a 4.7 and the electronic transfer case. Its got a problem though - it grinds, sometimes slips, and sometimes REALLY grinds. It only has AWD and 4hi/lo, so no 2wd option.
It really sounds like something is funky in the transfer case. I've read that the electronic ones can have issues, not sure if its related to that or another transfer case issue
Anyway, I would appreciate some feedback, I've never dealt with the electronic ones.
Could the electronic actuator just not be working right and causing this? My dakota would make similar sound if it wasn't popped into the right gear all the way..
Thanks guys.

Does it have a front axle disconnect of some sort on that year?
Maybe try pulling the shift motor off the back of the t-case and giving it a good cleaning. I know this works for Rangers when the electronic shift starts acting up.

Jason - what are symptoms when the rangers act up?
Mine was fine when i was test driving it but once I played with the switch, that's when trouble started... its like no one touched it for years and I moved it and it broke. I'm pretty hopefull its just the electronic shift
I actually dropped it off at the dealership, for 95 bucks they will tell me what's wrong with it exactly, its worth it to me vs. replacing un-needed parts. I'm hoping its just the shifting though
Cool car though, got it cheap 4 grand, nice looking for sure. Probably not going to do any real 4x4'ing with this, but I couldn't have an SUV without 4x4

I've always been confused, is it Bimmer or Beemmer?

I think it's pronounced Beemmer but spelled Bimmer.

spawn_x: Jason - what are symptoms when the rangers act up?
They just quit shifting into 4wd all together. I've never had it happen but know a few that have. They just took the shift motor apart, cleaned it, and it worked fine again.

I had a Dakota in for a warranty tranny rebuild. From the time it broke till the time I picked it up was 2 months. Yes you read it right "2 MONTHS" and no loaner!!!I got the run around from them that has never been beaten since. Call them everyday and beat their ear until you get answers. This experience is why I will never buy another Dodge.Their customer service stinks, always did and always will.

I picked up the vehicle, they said need new front diff, axles, and driveshaft.
I don't think I need ALL of those, so I'm going to start taking it apart and going from there.
Meh..
