could somebody tell me what it is that wears out on a ford truck('96 or older) that makes the steering loose as hell.
i've driven lots of ford trucks of the years '92 through '96, i,ve owned a '94, my brother owned a '95, and now i have another '95. and every one has that "loose" steering. i know they didn't have it when they were brand new. so that tells me theres some part that wears out causing this. could someone tell me which part or parts it is. im tired of wondering all over the road.

Is it a TBS front end? (Traction Beam Suspension) They are well known for getting loose and sloppy. You need to get under truck and have someone work steerings back and forth 3 or 4 inches and find were the play is and fix it. Truck does not have to be running to do this.

have you taken it too an alignment shop or asked one what the most common cause of this is.

An alignment will not fix worn out parts

Generally speaking as long as your alignment, tie rod ends and ball joint s are good its usually the steering box that gets sloppy.

The problem is with the Ford TBS front end, it could be a lot of things causing it and you need to narrow it down.

Every ford ttb I've ever seen wanders. I'd say the biggest problem with that design was too many bushings. C bushings, radius arm bushings, track rod bushings, ect. I now own my first ford product (86 bronco) and it wanders. I know the lower ball joints on my are wasted from the snow plow hanging off the front. I've never been a ford fan but mine is the 300 ci 6 cly. basic 4spd. I couldn't pass up the deal. So far so good.
