Whats the largest size tyre that is recommended for a Dana 44? I have a '82 CJ 8. Stock Cherokee 360 mated to a T18 Chrysler 4 speed. Currently running on 31" grabbers. I would like to go somewhere between 35" to 39" MT's. Would the Dana 44's from an '82 scout be considered a safe swap for my amc 20 rear and Dana 30 up front? I live in Trinidad (Caribbean) and can't get the beefier Dana 60.

i have a scout dana 44 in the rear of my jeep, and it is a great axle,  i wouldn't go much bigger then about 38 inches,  scout 44's can take alot of abuse, but i consider anything suspect to break with tires much bigger then 38's,  the only downside to scout axles, is that the shafts are hard to find, or at least they are here in KY.  but the scout 44's should be great.

with a dana 44 the biggest you want to go if you have a locker is about 35  but with a posi or open diff i'd say the biggest i'd go is 38-39"

Dana 44's will hold up until u try to put anything bigger than 35s on them.  If bigger tires are wanted, try puting in better shafts.

D44's are good for 35s stock.  Anything bigger and I'd upgrade the axleshafts and joints to aftermarket parts.  Any bigger than 38's I'd order a D60 from www.boyceequipment.com.

I agree, anything over 35 inch is asking for trouble without considerable modding. The problem is not the ring and pinion but the axles, knuckles and joints. If you use it hard and with a locker I would limit it to 33's with that V8 and it should be fairly bullet proof. I have one of those 360's in a stock 79 J20 P/U and it is a very strong motor at low to mid RPM's and can easily overpower a 44 with too big of tires on it.
