Fulltime 4x4 or Partime, automatic or manual?  (NP 203 or NP 205)

If its a 205 the gear patterns should be on that little knob

 4Lo, N, 2Hi, 4Hi

NP203

 4Lo Loc, 4Lo, N, 4Hi, 4Hi Loc

NP203 (converted part-time)

same as above but your 4Hi is 2Hi and your 4Lo Loc is your 4 Hi gear and you got 2 Low which is above N and 4 Lo Loc which is 4 Low

and telling the difference's between the two, for me i can tell a 205 by looking how close the front yoke is closest to the crossmember and having three bolts bolted back of the t-case

with 203's it shouldnt be hard, there big with a three piece aluminum casting which features a shifter box up front with two linkages to adjust the operating gears.

Hope that helps

ALso by the fact that automatics of that year came with full time and manuals came with part time (Unless someone has swapped something out)

Yeah true but some automatics came with converted part-time 203's and some but rarely TH350 and TH400 also came with 205's.

I never saw a 1/2 or a 3/4 ton GM from about 73 till 79 with a automatic that came with a 205 myself

"If" they are out there, they have likely been converted.

I have friends that have swapped 205's into their trucks from those years. Most of them have T350 or 400's, but I know they had to use an advance adapter kit to get it to work. As for those that came stock with them, I am not really sure.

You need to do some serious adapting to use a a THM400 with a 205

Actually, I believe that advance adapters sells a adapter plate for about 180 dollers. I think thats all that needed to be done but I'm not sure because I am not the one that did the actual install.

There is a tranny/input shaft spline mismatch too.

Yeah i think some people convert there 203's to 205's cause of how big the 203 is and adjusting the shift linkage's are a pain in a butt. I have a 75 Chevy 4x4 that came with a Full-time 203 it was good and all but i decided to swapp it for a 205 so i ended up removing the 7 bolts bolted to the plate, supported the tranny with a tranny jack, took off the plate with the remaining 4 bolts, i had equipped a 205 out of a 74 sub but i couldnt remove the plate bolted on the 205 cause of the bearings inside so i ended up using a tranny jack that supports the transfer case, i removed the tranny mounts on the crossmember so the 205 would slip onto the shaft back of the tranny after that was on, i bolted the 4 remaining bolts on lowered the crossmember so i could install the tranny mounts,....when removing a 203 from the original position, you'll notice that the tranny mounts are far pushed apart when trying to install a 205, some crossmembers have adjustable mounting positions on them so you can move the mounts to the exact position of the plate on the crossmember. Probably the biggest challenge in swapping a 203 for a 205 is the driveshafts, the 203's are shorter so they wont line up with the 205, with the 205 if you happen to come across a rear driveshaft dont use a three quarter ton cause if you do and you install combination knuckles on it you could cause your 205 t-case to vibrate severly, its probably best to look around for a driveshaft that will fit your 205 to the rear end yoke, there are places were they take your old driveshaft and stretch it out to the rite size that you need.
