Being able to weld effectively is a nice skill to have in you pocket if you like building and modify rigs and such. I have done my own welding for many years but I do not have the abilty to weld aluminum and have to contract that out when I need it.

Doing your own welding will bring a lot of satisfaction. Learning it should be enjoyable also, it was for me. What kind of schooling are you getting? Vocational, Continuing Education, Technical School, College? Hopefully safety will be stressed in your courses. I learned using Hobart learning materials at WVU-P. Even if your school does'nt use them, it would be a good and inexpensive investment. They are probably still paperback, about a hundred pages full of large pictures and illustrations, and fit in a three ring binder.

Welding is a good trade to get into. You can almost always get a job as a welder/fabricator. I've been doing MIG and Arc for a number of years and just started TIG. Working at a fab shop that makes commercial and residential playground equipment. Lots of cool benders, presses, etc... The more time you spend behind the torch/gun the better you'll get. Good luck mate!

Friendly info: TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas; you generally use it in A.C. mode (the pulses help to keep the work clean, as dirt in the welds causes flaws and thus weakness - especially stainless steel). The non-work clamped electrode ends in a tungsten electrode which slowly is eaten away by the arc; the filler metal comes from a filler rod of the same alloy as the work, fed in the same way as oxy-acetylene. It is a good machine to own as to get the job done professionally would cost an arm and a leg.
