Hey guys. does anybody know what all i need and how much it would cost to do a 350 engine swap to a 1986 2wd S-10? I kinda want to make it a street machine that will be able to haul ass on the weekends but also haul all my stuff when i need to.

It is pretty much a bolt in with a few mods because it has same bell housing as a 4.3 V6. You will have to get a much larger raditor and beef up front suspension for added weight. YOu will also need to upgrade rear axle if you whant it to hold together. You might give some though to a warmed up 4.3 with a 4.10 axle ratio as it will really get with the program and bolt it with much trouble.

The axle swap is a solid idea. My friend put a 400sbc/th400 in a 2wd 87 ext cab s10, but left the stock rear axle....he thought replacing broken axleshafts was funny, until he spun the carrier bearings and the pinion ate the ring gear.
You will need custom headers, even the swap headers require the steering shaft be moved slightly, which is easy in a 2wd. The firewall will need to be clearanced slightly for a stock distributor, or you can run a low profile distributor with a shorter cap.
If you currently have the 4.3L, a little custom work will need to go into the motor mounts (torched them off entirely and built new ones). If you have the 2.8L, the are conversion mounts out there to go from the stock 2.8L mounts to the v8.
With 2wd, you can also retain the regular v8 oil pan (with 4x4 models, the v8 pan wont clear the front diff).
You will need to put in a much bigger rad, as snoman said. If your stock truck was EFI, retain the stock fuel pump and delivery system, but you will need an adjustable fuel regulator to bring the fule pressure down to a carb freindly 8 psi (i think 8psi?...snoman knows this one!).
It's a worthwhile swap, the 87 with the 400 really hauled a$$ (when the rear end was intact) as it had 3.73 with little 14" donuts on it. At the same time, a 4.3L with a cam, vortec heads, an intake and some good headers, pushing 4.10 gears will make on he|| of a rocket!

There are covesion kits for anything these days. Advanced Adapters probably has for this proj. My friend just bought an entire kit to put a 383 in his 280z.

Of course there are conversion kits, but what kit do you buy if you have no idea what you need? Most conversion kits are not complete either, you usually have to get your own fuel delivery system, as well as other parts that may not be able to with stand the new motor (ie. rear axle).
The 350 s-10 swap doesnt really need a full kit, as it is pretty basic, just a few little parts and slight mods to the s-truck to fit it ok.
I would love to see a pic of the 383 crammed in the Z! My buddy is a Z-freak and would probably lay an egg to hear about that!

Ok I have done two of these they are common. First forget about fuel injection unless you remove the engine "and wiring harness's" from a doner vechical. EFI is also going to be more expensive and complicated. So just use a carb. As for the trans.a turbo 350 or 400 are easy to find and cheap to upgrade. A 10 bolt is also easy to find and cheap to modify. The problems that you may run into: Exaust, distributior, trans, rad, mounts, hood, rear end, suspension For the exaust use a camero 350block hugger"it points stright down. The distributior and transmission will hit the firewall so a 10 pound sledge may find it's way into your budget. They make kits that include mounts and radiatior but they are expensive. Put the engine in"rough fit" and measure your space a 4 core is almost nessary and electric fans are your best bet. Use a cowl hood 2-4in this will avoid the cost of low profile intakes dristributors air cleaners and they look nice too. Get a complete axel upgrade kit with a trac-lock. This will keep your truck going in a stright line without riping the weak axelshafts"the kit will have new shafts ment for the trac-loc diff" into little bits. And of corse the axel will have to be shortened. As for suspention because you want to haul stuff I sudgest a airbag kit. But upgrading the rear leafs and front springs is all you really need to do. I strongley sudgest that you get new spindles because of the additional stress is a concern"cheap insurance". Ok, I think I covered everything this setup should cost 3500 and up. This is how I figure it Old carb vechical with a 350/350 10 bolt"carburated Camero/c10 truck... $800. S10 350 conv kit 800. Hood $300 Suspension-leafs springs and spindles. 300 Rear axel kit/shorting 1200 Yes it is expensive but anything worth doing should be done right. Good luck

ok i have done this swap a lot of times and it is easy to swap in a v8 and leave it efi very simple swap if you get the corect headers jegs p#500-69520 for straight plug heads jegs p#500-69530 for angle plug heads mount kit p#969-9906 for 4.3 to sbc or jegs p# 969-9926 for 2.8 to sbc or a complet kit p#969-9926k1 pre79 sbc or p#969-9926k2 for 85 up sbc these kits come with oilpan headders mounts and exhaust mufflersbut yes you will still ned to mod. the firewill a touch with a big hammerwith a low pro air cleaner you do not have to change hoods what we have found that works the best if you want a 2x4 is use a 4x4 just take out all the 4x4 stuff ( front dif trans&t-case ect)then you can use a stock sbc oil pan jegs also offers a conversionradiator 82 to 93 p#134-68012 for auto trany ok on the efi you need to use the computer from the doner truck ya got the motor from and get the t.p.s plug also this is the only plug you will have to change maybe early gm used a flat 3 plug late uses a round 3 plug other thaan that every thing will plug in yes even the computer plugs right in just take out the s-10 computer and put in the doner trucks computer yes using a doner truck works the best even if ya go to a junk yard toget the motor just ash that ya get the motor and computer from the same truck
