Not too sure about the pickups but my brother in-law has a 88 GMC Jimmy 4x4 and it has a solid front axle right from the factory. This year never came with IFS in the 4wd model. I would fiqure the pickups would be the same.

87 was the last year for regular pickups with solid front axle (though some specail cab and chassis model continued in old style until 91) and Burbs and Blazers did not convert to new body style and IFS until 92. I have a 89 4x4 burb that I bought new that is still in very fine shape.

Just by reading what you post, your a pretty fart smeller, I mean a smart fellow, Ha,Ha, just kidding. I myself know a whole lot of car and truck stuff as I've been working on cars and trucks for 26 years. Your not that bad after all!!! Sorry about all the negativity in the past. Make sure that your head doesn't swell up too bad!

My first 4x4 with a 67 chevy 1/2 ton in early 70's with a 283 and a 3 on the tree and a closed knuckle front axle and I have owned about 9 more 4x4's since then and I have a old 79 J20 that I have owned for over 20 years now (I tend to keep them a while) and currently own three 4x4's. There was a time when you could go to a dealer to buy a 4x4 and they would laugh at you and tell you that it would take 3 to 6 months to specail order one. Most have been GM with a few Jeeps and a IH Scout in mix too. I remember the change over to new style well because I was going to order a new diesel 90 4x4 burb when I found a new gas 89 equipped the way I wanted with about every option possible including dual batteries and heaters and bought it instead and never regretted getting a gas one instead of a diesel. I also own a 2000 old style K3500 SRW as it was the last year built before it was replaced by 2500 HD and 3500 in 01 because in 99 GM made only 1/2 ton and LD 3/4 tons in new body style.

I remember when I was just a little kid back in the early 70's my Dad had a late 60's Chevy 2wd shortbed pickup with a 283, I don't recall what trans. it had but I believe it was a 3 on the tree. My favorite Chevy pickups and Blazers are the '67 to '72 models. These were the best looking vehicles ever in my opinion. I went to Carisile Pa. back in Oct. and someone had three of them sitting in their front yard all for sale. The highest priced one was $1800 and all of them were in pretty decent shape. The only thing that I didn't like about them they were all long beds. I myself have to have a short bed. One of these days I hope to find one with a short bed, V-8, with either a auto trans. or a 4-speed manual. I will be going back to Carisile Pa. April the 22nd for the car show and sale.

I agree on the body style years too. I boughr a 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 in 74. It was a beast of a truck and very rare back then. I drove it for 10 years and I wish now that I had never sold if but had kept it and restored it. I had a 350 4bll with a SM 465 4 speed, 4.10 gears with a NP205, spicer axles, factory HD suspension and factory dual gas tanks with 16 inch split rims and I used to run 750x16 10 ply traction grip tires on it that were about 32 inches tall. I put 150k mile on it before I sold if and rebuilt (it really did not need it though) and warmed up the motor a few years before I sold it. That truck would run and was very capable off road too. 67 thru 72 had stronger frames up front because beginning in 73, GM notched out the upper frame rails to provide clearance for emmision type exhaust manifolds.

My brother in-law's father bought him an old beater '69 Chevy short bed pickup with a pretty shot engine back in the 80's. We pulled the old engine out and put in a remanufactured 400 small block with an edelbrock intake and carb., and headers. He also had some body work done on it and had it painted. This was a pretty fast truck when it was completed.

Sometimes he would let me drive it for a whole day every once in a while. This truck was soo much fun!

I sure miss the good old days when the older cars & trucks were plentiful.

I nearly put a 396 in my 72 GMC a few years before I sold it. (I had a car with a rusted frame and a good 1969 396). That would have been a awesome swap and I wish I had taken the time to do it back them. If you think a 400 mouse motor ran well, you should see want a 396 rat block would do. (the exhaust ports were bigger than the 400 SB intake ports and the rats intake ports were huge!) Man did they have the torque and smooth too. (396 was fully balanced internally and was one smooth mill)

The 396 huh? I can get one of these, are they a good build, I mean do they produce a good amount of H.P.? Plenty of after market stuff? I was going to get a 350, but if you think the 396 would be better.. Let me know. Thanks

The 350 is a good motor without doubt and can make some impressive power if you build it and wind it up enough but the 396 is a hole different animal and they do not call it the "rat" for no reasom. If was designed as a performance motor from day one and at its peak it was offered as a 396/425 HP.  396 also have great torque that 350's can only dream about and can make the same HP as a 350 at about 1000 RPM or more less too. The 454 is based on the 396 block but they have smog heads on them unless you can find a rare 1970 454/465 HP engine. The 396 never had smog heads. There was also a 427 (they are kinda rare) which was a 396 block bored out with same stroke. Both the 396 and 427 will wind up a bit better than the longer stroked 454 if you push them hard. Thje 396 was made from 65 to 70. When I was young my dad ordered a new loaded 66 Chevy Caprice with 396 and factory dual exhausts. That car was a real jack rabbit and the engine was smooth as silk. I had one in a 69 and it was like a big electric motor at times because it was so smooth with goobs of torque.
