Hey All, i have an 84 Chevy K10 custom deluxe with a 4 inch suspension lift with 35 inch Ground Hawgs. I have a 350 bare block that i'm going to have punched 30 over. I've built motors for cars before but nothing really for off roading. I was wondering if you could share some ideas on building a great offroad engine. Like witch parts to use, brands to use. and any thing like that. I've got an idea on how i want to build it i just don't know the best way to do it. Thanks Jeff

its not all that much different than building a car motor, it depends on what kind of off roading you plan on doing.  If you  plan on doing alot of mudding a high revving high horse power motor would be your best bet... for crawling and slower speeed trails you want a good torquey motor.  Fuel injection is always a good idea.. but a good carb.. qjet isnt a bad one.. there is another one, dont remember the name right off... that is built more for off road and truck use...

4x4's are heavy and you need a different power curve than in a light weight car. Also tranny type and gear ratio is a factor to. If you biuld it for yop end you better have 4.88 or better in it so the it is more managable on the trail. I would not get too wild with todays fuel prices and I would stay with a carb because carbs stilll rule ar WOT. I would limt cam choice duration to about a .450 lift and 260 duration. Also, you might consider 10 to 1 compression and never use 87 in it because it will give you more power and better MPG and with today fuel price it may be cheaper too in the long run. Also if you go the 10 to 1 or higher route, you can go to 270 on cam duration and still have good low rpm response. When you build a engine to run on 87, you greatly limit its potenail.

A friend of mine is going to build  a stroker out of his 350. he was asking me if the is any differance in a stock 400 crank and the 400 crank that comes in a stroker package. what do you think?

They are different. The stock 400 crank has bigger main bearings (diameter) than the stroker for a 350. The "stroker for the 350 is basically a 400 crank with the mains turned down to fit in a 350 block. It has to be externall balance afterwards too.
