Y'all always have good answers to hard problems. Well, here's a doozie.
I have literally been searching in books and online for 3 solid hours every night for 3 days, for an answer to my problem with my transmission removal and I can find nothing.
My truck is a stock 1984 Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 with a top cover SM465.
Problem:
I cannot get my freakin transmission out of my truck! I can only slide the tranny back about 2" before the shifter tower hits the rear edge of the floor opening. I've allowed the engine to pivot downwards on the motor mounts as far as I can without crushing my distributor cap, still no-joy. I've even (unintentionally) had the transmission hanging from the input shaft, so I know it won't go any lower.
-The Haynes manual and every other online help has told me to remove the "transmission floor cover". Then simply slide the transmission rearward and drop the transmission down.
Butt...MY TRUCK DOESNT HAVE A FRIGGIN' "TRANSMISSION FLOOR COVER"!!!
I already knew this when I started because I have become intimate with the bottom of my cab and I saw no seams to indicate a removable panel. But being a good boy and following all the steps in the Haynes manual, I removed the seat, carpet, and padding and all there is are two holes in the floor. The rest is smooth stamped metal.
What's the deal, do I have some sort of special freak truck or something? This is not a conversion from a automatic or anything. Everything on the truck is stock except the engine, and I'm not so sure it's not the original engine.
I do not have the equipment or inclination to pull the engine and tranny out together. My factory air still works (if you can believe that), and I don't want to disturb my A/C system in any way by pulling the engine.
Please help a very poor and very frustrated future offroader.

You do not many options here. You could try remove the engine mounts "frame to mount bolt and that will let the engine pivot down a further. You could also remove the middle and bad cab to frame mounts and raise the cab a enough to clean the tranny cover. Last option would be to cut the floor pan back enough (two cuts so you can bend a piece up) to allow you to remove it and reinstall it. When they biuld them at the factory, they set the cab on the frame with engine and tranny already installed.

Most chevy pick up have a removeable cover w/ bolts exc. some 2wd cabs The panel is about 12"x18" once that cover is off make sure the trans is in neutral and unbolt the the top plate. It does suck sometimes I've been there alot of times myself

texas reb is right, pull back your carpet a bit, being a high hump (4x4) it should have a removable hump.. if you still dont have any luck... try this.. www.67-72chevytrucks.com go to the 73-87 truck message board...

Go to www.coloradok5.com
When all the carpet is removed there should be a cover where the hump is bolted in that will come out. If not cut a hole with a diegrider and cutoff wheel. While it is out add some taps to where you can bolt the piece back in. But go to the above sight. There is a free membership but to me the payed membership is worth it. It is mostly chevy straight axle truck websight but there is some there for all gm 4bys. '73 chevy stepside 350/3on the tree/205/44-12/35's

GM did away with that on later models, I am just not sure when they did.

Been there ,done that.I have an 86 Blazer that had a 700R and 208 t-case.I swapped out to a sm465 and 205 t-case.The Blazer has the same floor set-up as yours and what I did was to cut the floor and retrofit a removeable floor pan from the same year pick-up truck. If this is not acceptable, there is anothere way around this problem. When you remove the shifter boot you will see a round shaped cap at the bottom of the shifter. If you grag this with a pair of channel locks and twist it counter-clockwise while pushing it down the the shifter will come out. This should allow the tranny to be removed. If you had a sloppy shift you will find a bushing under the cap that needs replacement,or the flat end of the shifter is worn out and requires some extra metal welded to it.Good Luck.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the tips. However, some of you are incorrect when you say there is a removable center section. On SOME year models, the trucks didn't have this. And, yes I completly removed my carpet and padding to double check.
I finally got that booger out last night, after removing my distributor cap. This allowed the engine to pivot down another 2". What a pain in the butt!
I am glad that I was able to finally figure it out myself although I don't know why it took me so long to just take off the distributor cap!?
Oh well, lesson learned. Hopefully this discussion will let others know so they don't have the same problems I had.
Again, thank you all for your suggestions.
Don't step in nuthin' you can't step out of!
