Pickup vs, SUV

Okay...Since no one answered my post about whether or not Toyotas were the thing to get...how about this?....Should I go for pickup or SUV. I know they both can be built for the trail really well...but that pickup departure angle sure seems like a vulnerable point. Does that matter? Also I've found that SUV's can be good because a rear seat passenger can be used as a sliding weight to balance the vehicle in a pinch. But what do you all think is better?

I really don't have a preference, but you could most likely find a pickup for less money than an SUV and then bob the bed for that departure angle... Beer, it's what's for dinner.

I think the reason you haven't gotten a good responce is the type of question you pose. What do you really need? How crazy do you want to go and how deep are your pockets? I had an 84' toy 4x4 I bought just to beat the snot out of for $100. It wasn't road worthy but it sure was fun while it lasted. We cut off the rear frame just behind the shackles and built a wood flatbed. We had just as much fun building it up as breaking it apart. I'd recommend anything cheap for your first 4x4 because its going to get hurt while you learn what you can and can't do. Keep a list of goods and bads and buy what works better for you the next time.

Hey I own along bed truck (FORD/4X4),and a S.U.V.(small JIMMY/4X4) ones a tunnel rat, and one a powerfull oceanliner(ship)I take both off roading and that means forest roads not open forest land I like the part about the sliding weight in back carry sand bags in a truck for weight my brother dose. I bought a truck first the second was a 4 cylinder for gas mileage but is a real whimpy trail rig I would recomend a Toyota extra cab for room and of course four wheel drive six cylinder straight axle if you prefer(in front) they are small and that helps on the tight and narrow trail.MOUNTAINRAT

I own 3 4x4's at moment and have owned about 10 others so far.The smallest and lightest vehical that can do the needed job always take the day when things get nasty and a lot easier than a "ocean liner" to get "unbeached" too.

I've owned 3 jeeps ,4 fullsize blazers ,3 small blazers,and about 5 4x4 pickups and they all have there good points( well maybe not the small blazers there hard to lift). It depense on what you want to do and were you are going (i.e. woods,mud, trails, rocks ...) Is it adaily driver or a toy. but buy what you like and can afford. because you will break it and chevys seem to be cheaper to find and get parts for. But thats me.
I have a 1980 blazer for sale.

I disagree with the breaking part. Left reasonably stock you will "break" a Chevy before a Toyota off road. If you limit yourself to 31's or less on a Toyota, it is doubtfull you will have any problems with its drive train. Remember a Toyota weighs a lot less and needs less tires than a large truck does in mud to do well as a rule and is a lot easier to get unstuck too.
