Modern Cummins are not 7 PSI boost at full power bub, you are dreaming. Buy your Diesel if you want it is your bank account. Most people that rave about diesel do not take the time to (or know how to) add up ALL the costs of owning one including purchase price, maintaince, insurance (since it cost more to buy), electric bill to heat it in winter as well as fuel costs but this seems to escape you.  They just do not pay off on the bottom line unless you go 200,000 miles with no injector pump or injector failure because if you do, your NEVER break even then over a gasser. It is truely amazing how we towed big trailer for years without these things isn't it?  WHen they were a 2200 or so dollar option they were somewhat viable, but not at 7 grand they are not.

Seems the one who's full of it is you.  With hot air that is.  If we had you around noone'd ever need glow plugs or a preheater even at -40.

maybe someone should take a look under a super duty. that big round thing under the cab on the exhaust is a cat. just like the ones on gas vehicles, and no im not from the future. maintenance costs are really the same too. my cummins takes 13 quarts every 7500 miles. thats only 5.2 quarts every 3000 miles. how many quarts does that big block take? that injection pump only runs about $650 installed [ not $2000] there is no big block that will last 300,000 miles while towing a trailer.and yes a diesel can. mine has over 250k on it, and most of those are towing. either my 5500lb. k5 or my old power wagon mud truck that i used to own. diesels have a higher a higher efficiency in the combustion chamber, which means more power, better fuel economy, fewer maintenence stops and less emmissions. so not only will i be passing you on a hill, but i'll be waiting on the other side of the gas station for you to fill up so i can pass you again.

Diesel do not have few emmisions, just less regs on them. THey have used the excuse of poor fuel quality for years (hi sulphur content) as a reason that better controls cannot be added to them. (BTW they are many times worse than a gasser in NOx emissions too) Well, this will change in 2008 and they will have to toe the line too with cats!  Also, I do not know where the heck you get lower maintaince cost with a diesel? Two batteries, 2 x to 3 x as much oil in engine, the same or more frequent oil changes than a gasser, more expensive filters and more off them and jsut wait to you have to have your injection pump repaired, you will love that price tag! There is nothing cheap about maintaining or repairing a modern diesel in a P/U.

I have test started new diesel every year on lots in winter and they still SUCK. I can leave my gasser anywhere at -20 and not even give a second thought to it starting and running. I cannot risk have a freak strom and cold wx dump a lot of snow and knock power out and not be able to preheat oil burner to get it running and give clients a lame excuase.  They are still and always will be a very poor choice for cold weather service especailly below zero. And actually the old prechambered glow plug diesels did start better in cold wx than the modern turbo charged direct injection ones because the base compression was higher too which built more heat in the compressed air in chamber at cranking time.

you must be retarded. you also did not read what i wrote last time. i replaced my injection pump for $650. not $2000 like you seem to think it would cost. it also only has one battery. it costs a bit more but lasts longer because it's designed for a bus. oil changes are NOT more frequent, but every 7500 miles. that's 13 quarts every 7500 miles [ you do the math]. higher initial cost is also offset by higher resale value. the higher cost is about $5000, not $7000 like you said. it also seems to me that you take numbers and inflate them by at least 25% to make them work for you.

I agree.  Diesels just work better.  Gas is a convienence because its everywhere.  I get twice the mileage as my Dad's 2003 gas powered chevy.  I like his truck but in another 5 years which will be worth more and still work harder?  Diesel owners usually turn thier own wrenches so maintaince costs aren't that big of a deal.  I like to do my own work cuz then I know who to blame.

Amen bro!  Diesel is about 30 cents cheaper where I live which when you combine with the awesome mileage diesels make; any "hidden" costs are made up for pretty quick.  Plus a gas motor of comparable power could never make that kind of mileage especially pulling a heavy trailer.

No I think you are. You see that big Diesel emblem and you are blinded to eveything else. The extra 7 grand cost, the extra maintainance costs and repair cost too. I keep my trucks well past 100,000 miles and at least 10 years usually and have gotten of 200,000 out of them with out major repairs. Run your 100,000 mile warranty out and pay for just one rebuilt diesel injector pump and you will cry from the bill. I can buy a awfull lot of gas for 7 grand and reduced maintance cost and I will tow anything with a properly equipped gasser that you will with a Power Joke or Duracraps or even a Cummins. Diesel made more sense when they were 2500 dollar options and were lower tech and more reliable but that is not the case with them any more. The original Cummins was a good sturdy engine and thrifty too but it is long gone and the old 6.5 GM was a good motor too and I still know people that swear by them. I am not anti diesel as you think, I am against paying to much too much to get the job done and not balancing the bottom line of ownership. Today modern fuel injected gasser or very powerfull and reliable and with direct injection gassers on the horizon and emmision control coming to diesels in 2008 (yes cats on diesels) diesels will look even less attractive in the future.
