I am getting ready to build a 68' International Scout 800.  I am putting the drivetrain out of a 79 ramcharger in it.  what are the axles and how will they hold up with a 360 motor turning them on Moabs slick rock.

Hmm... that's a good question... got pictures?

If I had to guess I'd say probably 44's, but I could be way off. I'm not up on my Dodge trivia.

Is the 360 coming out of the Ramcharger? If so then the axles will be fine. Well... what size tires?

I am probably going to run between 35s and 39s not sure yet.  The Ramcharger actually had a 440 when we bought it but that was going to take to much modification to fit it under my scouts hood.

Ok, front axle from the ramcharger will be a Dana 44.  Rear axle will be a Chrysler 9.25".  It's their own corporate axle that they used way back and are still using (to the best of my knowledge) under the 1/2 ton Rams today.  In my opinion, it's not that great of an axle.  They have been prone to bad pinion bearings and after all, it's still a 1/2 ton semi float axle.  Now, with a mild 360 in that little 800, you will probably be alright if you stay under 37" rubber.  I would not recommend going any taller than that because even though you will have the drivetrain in a lighter vehicle than the axles came out of, you will still be running a healthy V8 and 330 ft lbs of torque combined with big tires and weak axles are never a good thing.  If you want to stay with 1/2 ton axles, look for a semi float Dana 60 out of a late 70s/early 80s van.  They're out there if you know what to look for.  Even a 9.5" 14 bolt semi float would be a better option than the 9.25" chrysler.  I believe Dodge even put semi float Dana 60s in the rear of some of their late 70's/early 80s 1/2 ton pick ups with the adventurer package.

I am planning on regearing it to 4.56 or 4.88 would that make a differance?
