I have 1990 chevy pickup with a 6inch suspension lift with 4.11 gears. when i go and put in four wheel the drive side tire locks up, but when i go in reverse the front pumkin grinds like *** I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on whats goin on up front?

open the diff up and check it out.  you may have teeth missing from your ring gear.  or maybe the vacume is not functioning correctly and not engaging your front diff completely.  how do you know the pass side tires are not recieving power?  if there is a loss of traction in that diff only one tire will rotate due to it being an open diff.that diff is extremely easy to take apart, just unbolt your axle shafts and drop it. id pull it apart and check it out.

The front axle disconnect on a 90 fullsize chev isnt vaccuum actuated. It is a thermal coupling, and in some instances an electromagnetic coupling..
