Was considering a 4" cat back exhaust for my truck (99 F250 superduty 4x4 w/7.3 powerstroke), any brand better then the other? When i say better i am asking about m.p.g. gains, drop in egt's, etc.

ANYTHING BUT BANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All you're paying for with Banks anymore is the name. Technology has come a long way since they were the only game in town for Diesel stuff. Any 4" or 5" cat back is going to have pretty much the same performance in a cat back style of system. The real performance gains in Diesel exhausts are from "Turbo" back systems because they open up wide right from the start behind the turbo. If you just go with a cat back system, it's like blowing through a straw with a garden hose attached to the other side, no matter how hard you blow, you can only push so much volume through the straw no matter how big the garden hose is. Open it all the way up and the difference will be night and day. For what it's worth, I think that Summits' in house 4" exhaust is a really nice set up, great value as well. If you plan on going balls out with mods to your Diesel, then step up to a 5" system. Just remember to get a Turbo back system, otherwise all your paying for is different noise out of the tailpipe.

I was avoiding the turbo-back setups because of upcoming smog laws changing in california, changes that are going to target diesels. But ya i have seen the summit stuff, seems like a good value.

Honestly, pretty much all of them are the same. Pick out the cheapest one that looks the way you want it too. With a Cat Back on a diesel all you are adding is a larger tail pipe, so as long as they are they same size they do the same thing.
And I guess there can be a slight variation in sound, but if it were me I'd just straight pipe it after the cat.

Yup, sure can. And are. They will start smogging Diesels in 2010 as Bryan said.
More like working Top Truck and then vacation in Pismo... not quite a hiatus... And if you enjoyed that you're going to love when I take off for Ultimate Adventure here in a few weeks.

Starting January 1st all diesels manufactured after 1997 with a GVW of less than 8,501 lbs.
The law and test procedure is still really vague though.
Yea, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in this company with out a blackberry... not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

this is what looms on the horizon for diesel owners in california, i am unclear as to how they get around any "grandfather" clause which would prtoect current owners but ya here you go. http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/05_Legislative/RegulatoryActions/DieselTestProceduresVer5.pdf
