Now that I think about it... what gears do you have? I'm guessing you never corrected the speedo/odo after the tires...

Better air flow = more torque at lower RPM = more MPG with manual. Need MPG advice with auto trans.
I Have 4.0, 5 spd manual 88 cherokee. 250K miles, Am getting 20-23 mpg combo city and highway.  I replaced the paper filter with an AirHog (like a K&N) and got a 2 mpg improvement because of being able to get more torque at lower rpms and thus could get the same acceleration while running lower rpms. With paper air filter  mileage would decrease when the 4.0 crankcase vent started clogging the paper air filters with oil film but does not negatively affect the oil based air filter flow.
Need auto tranny mpg advice. --Just bought a 99 cherokee 4.0 with auto trans.  With 99 auto trans getting only 18 MPG. That is after I achieved a 0.8 mpg improvement by improving exhaust flow.
Any ideas on auto tranny mpg improvement The auto trans decides for itself when to shift and just won't shift to next gear  at low rpm like my I can with my manual trans.

you seem like a well educated person, could you help me out? I have a 95 jeep cherokee 4.0 and am trying do the same thing, get better mpg in urban driving.  Iv been thinking allot about it. Here's my idea,  power inverter to power a  window ac unit, pipe that into the air filter box( using a high flow K&N filter) on my jeep cherokee and insulate my intack pipe.
I know denser air gives you a better explosion so I thought id wonder, thanks and have an awsome day.

ive got a 99 cherokee sport with the 5 speed trans and the I6. i can get just over 20 mpg highway with no engine mods. im running 30 X 9.50 goodyear GS/As and the jeep needs an alignment. i plan on doin a cold air intake and a throttle body spacer. the intake is from rustys and comes with a K & N cone filter. i will be upgrading to the bigger filter. anyway, after the alignment, we shall see how my gas milage improves. i also keep within 5 mph of the speed limit and shift before the rpms get too high!
99 cherokee, 5spd, stock with front and rear tow points and 30 x 9.5 wrangler GS/As. costume front bumper with 7inch optronic lights and TJ flares modified.
