1986blazer: omg are you a gamer or is that thing running NASA lol
dude i DJ with mine and it never crashs. oh btw my motherboard has a built in sound card and graphics card... was $100. also peeps at frys will try and take advantage of you if you dont know what you want. trick is to be 6'5 240 and shaved head lol
does b4 bit OS even read 8 gigs i think your looking at a 1000-2000 bucks
NASA
I'm not worried about crashing, I'm more concerned with power. Obviously.
I don't game, at all. I haven't played a computer game since the first Half Life/Counter-Strike, and even then I wasn't very good. lol
Really I want something that can handle photo and video editing/processing without so much as a hiccup. And I figure if I pull this system together I should be able to handle that. For a few years
Yes, 64 Bit OS's like Windows 7 should be able to handle 8 gig's no problem. I'd be fine with 6, but if I get a MoBo that can handle 8 then might as well.
Yea, that's the downside, this machine will likely be near $1000 before all is said and done. Luckily I'm able to cannibalize a few parts off of my current machine, like two of the HDD's, keyboard/mouse, speakers, ect.
If it doesn't work out this way I won't be too upset, I just started thinking about it. I'm working on picking up new hard parts slowly as I find deals. I'll wait and get the processor/mobo last as they are the parts that will go down in price or have new tech come out in the next few months.
I'm shooting to have it built by November. But we'll see.

Oh, and I don't like the onboard graphix and sound. I prefer to have stand alone cards as they work far better than onboard. Sound is one area that I don't want to give up any quality. I've got a 1,500watt surround system hooked to my computer... hehe...

Yea, I don't need the dual cards, I just use one.
It's 1,500 watts not 1,000... jeez you tried to take away 500 watts! haha. Yea, it rattles everything. Of course that's peak, I have no clue what it actually runs at RMS.

I kind of liked vista but my laptop didn't have enough memory to run it properly and I don't really need to install a new OS onto my desktop as that one runs perfectly, and I don't want to upgrade to a new pc quite yet.

Hey Blazer, check out MP3car.com if you haven't already found it. It's a forum where people have been building carputers for awhile now. I got on a kick to put one in my old truck, even built an entire computer, bought the DC-DC power supply, and built a custom center console to hold a 19" monitor, but it never got implemented. They will have suggestion on screens with digital input.

I built my last computer up with average components at the time -04ish- but my hard drive crashed and kind of pissed me off. I bought another HD and it hasn't booted up right since. Jason I didn't know you were such a computer geek, I may have to hit you up sometime to help. I went out and bought a Dell laptop but the HD is almost full, only 100Gb. Anyone if you can upgrade the HD on laptops? I need more storage space, but don't like to track down my external everytime I go to find a pic or update my Ipod.

Hey Brian, do you know if your laptop has an IDE or a SATA type of hard drive? If it is new enough it is probably SATA, and yes they are upgradeable. Check with the paperwork that came with or look up your model number to see what you got. Just like any hard drive upgrade you would need to do a backup of all the files you want to save and then re-install the operating system with the new hard drive in place. How big of a hard drive would you be looking for?

It's a Dell Precision M90, and yes it's a SATA. Is it really as easy as making a backup on an external drive, opening it up and replacing the HD, reinstall windows using the CD they hopefully provided, and copying my external HD back onto it? It seems like programs would get messed up or corrupted. I have a lot of downloaded programs that I no longer have easy access to, would they survive a swap? Do most computer stores perform the swap for a fee? 500Gb is very tempting, I'm sick of it taking forever to load anything with being so full. Maybe I should do a memory upgrade while I'm in there.

Files can be swapped but programs would need to be reinstalled.

Dang, it will take forever to find all the intall files, if I even have them. Oh well I better get cracking on burning CDs. I also found I can put a maximum of 4GB memory on my mobo. Gonna do that while I'm inside.

Are you running XP? I have an XP disc that will work on multiple computers.

Brian Of course you can upgrade your laptop HD, just find a 2.5" sata HD and drop it in. Kevin is also a techie, he used to work for western digital. When my last laptop jumped out of Moggy and broke in a few places I found a HP NR3610 which is what the military and police use. I also put a SSD HD in because i was tired of the dam things breaking, i think i am hard on them. The SSD HD are supposed to last about 140 years...the avg HD has a life span of 5 years and in my case much less. My new old laptop can be dropped on concrete about 30 times and is water tight and the screen is a touch screen. I also put in 2 GB of ram and it works great, and it is Kai proof too...
