I know we have some tech savy people here so here goes... what do you guys think of the new Windows, Windows 7?
It is available for PreOrder right now for only $49.99. Seems like a pretty good deal for a new operating system. Still not quite as cheap as the Snow Leopard upgrade though at $30 from Mac.
So, opinions? Anybody try the beta version?

Does that come after Vista? If so, they pretty much have no where to go but up. I have never used a Vista computer that hasn't frozen up on me in the first 5 minutes. Never!

I've never used Vista either, but I'm planning out a build of a new machine in the near future since mine is getting old and slow and right now you can pre-order Windows 7 for $49.99 (like I said) and I'm thinking I might want to try it on the new machine, if it's not too bad.

Hey Jason if you don't already know, try http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/shop.asp when you go to buy your new computer. Competitive prices and reasonable shipping, i know you live in the valley but if you are ever near south orange county they have will call.

I don't live in the valley... I'm in Long Beach(ish) and our office (one of them) is in Irvine, about 20 minutes from that place.
If they have the selection and competitive pricing with NewEgg I may give them a shot.

1986blazer: way cheaper to build your own
I disagree. Sort of. I guess it depends on how much you want to cannibalize your old system.
The system that I'm planning out now will be the fourth or fifth complete PC I've built from scratch, or mostly scratch.
The problem with building a machine versus buying one is that when you build one the likelihood of using more premium parts is greater, driving the costs up, instead of just buying a preassembled box from a big box store like BestBuy that used inferior parts, but that works.
The last machine I built (what I'm currently using at home) I built over four years ago now and it's still pretty competitive and working pretty well. It's got an AMD 64 3000+ processor, 1 gig (I think) of DDR400 ram, two 80gig WD SATA HD's, a Radeon 5500 video card, Sound Blaster Audigy sound card, and some other junk I can't remember. I want to say this one ended up costing about $800 to build, when I could have gone out and purchased a complete computer for $300 from BestBuy.
Now for the one I'm planning now I want to run an Antec case and PS (1000watt), AMD Phenom Quad Core processor, Asus MB, 8gigs DDR3 Ram, Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card, 80GB WD HD (Pri), 1TB WD HD (Sec), 1TB WD HD (Bak), and I'm still debating on video cards, if I should get one, which one, or just run with onboard video. Definitely want HD though. And Windows 7 as the OS.
I figure if I build a machine with those specs it should easily get me through another 5+ years.
Yes.. I'm a small time computer nerd... but what else would you expect from the web guy... lol

I've never really been a fan of Fry's. Just something about it. Not sure why. Bad experiences from people in the past that I guess have just stuck with me.
You are right about smaller stores being overpriced. I've bought a few parts from PC Club over the years and definitely over paid, and the people working there are usually pricks, especially when you come in asking for one small part. I bet if you're trying to build the ultimate uber gamming rig their eyes would probably light up and you'd get good service.
Personally, I love NewEgg. Good prices, Great selection, and Fast (usually free) shipping.
