Okey here is the question.  I have a GM 14 bolt 6 lug rear end.  I also have a GM 14 bolt 8 lug rear end both are semi floating.  Both have 410 gears.  The 8 lug ring and pinion, spiders and side gears are in better condition.  Can I take the 6 lug axles out of the rear end they are in and put them in the 8 lug rear end.  Or are there some difference in the two.  It would seem the only difference would be the number of lugs on the axle.  Thanks

I'm pretty sure the axles them selves are smaller on the 6 lug.

But if you have both of them there is an easy way to find out. Pull an axle shaft from both. Measure the overall length, the diameter of the shaft at the bearing and at the splines, and count the splines. If they are all the same then go for it!

Which lug patter is the front of your truck 6 or 8? I'm guessing 6?

Yes the front is 6 lug and that is why I am trying to stay with the 6 lug 14 bolt.  I am suprised that no one has a answer on this one.  I have tried rear end speciality shops and no one seems to know.  I am going to pull the carrier out of the 8 lug and see if it will fix the six lug axle.  I will measure the axles at the same time. Thanks

No one knows because the six lug 14bt is such a rare axle. There are probably 50 times the amount of 8 lug 14's as there are 6 lug, possibly even more. I know personally I've only ever seen three, and I've seen a lot of 14's.

as far as i know the 9.5 semi floater 14 bolts are the same internally....the shafts just have the different lugs on the ends.....6 lugs were for the HD 1/2 tons and the 8 lugs were for the LD 3/4 tons
