I believe the Unlimited is still offered as a two door. They based the 4 door on the response to the Dakar concept Jeep. I think it looked cool.
More options in what you can get is a good thing, just don't buy the ones you don't like. I'm not buying anymore Jeeps until they build the Gladiator, so it makes no difference to me. I'm on a Jeep Fast in protect that they showed me the truck I've always wanted and then years later they still haven't decided what to do with it.

Well, then I guess the GC isn't a "true" Jeep in your book either, 'cause the Commander is its kissin' cousin. I stand by my original assertion that it's not related to the Durango.

The *new* Wrangler will be sold and many people will learn to love it. Hell when YJ's replaced the CJ's, everyone B****ed that it had square headlights. Yet it was bought and eventually excepted as a *real* jeep. Then the YJ's were replaced with TJ's, again b****ing occured because it came with coil springs. Now it is okay to have tj's and yj's and still be a jeep enthusiast. So I say let it be because eventually the *new* Wrangler will gain momentum and following like the rest of the jeeps. If we want to argue about watering down the brand, lets talk about the patriot and the compass. Talk about not real Jeeps.

What is a "real Jeep"? I'm new to jeepin since I bought a used 99 TJ back in September thinkin I just bought a serious offroad vehicle!
Wrong! Well to start with I found out my Dana 35 is junk and should be replaced before it breaks out on a trail. I usually have to drive 2-3 hours to a decent trail so I installed a new Ford 8.8
Then I hear my Dana 30 is ok but if I want to get serious I should consider a Dana 44 or 60 or possibly a Ford 9". Haven't done anything yet.
I have the 3 speed auto that I hear is afraid of water since the vent tube is in the bellhousing area.
Don't get me wrong, I love the my jeep and actually enjoy working on it, but they have been building these for over half a century and they still can't get it right!
What's so hard about building a quality product that stands up to the abuse they were intended for?
Ok I'm done. Thanks

If you think that the CJ was the peak. I have been with jeeps for many years. The jeep has had a few mistakes but the new Wrangler Unlimited is one of the best 4X4's on the planet. It come with all the bells and whistles that you would want. It is TRAIL READY. Don't be a hater just go and drive one off road and you will change your mind. This Jeep ROCKS!!!!! But I agree on the other stuff you wrote.

The Company has to realize that the people who have kept them in the money all these years are not going to be back for another one. IFS, plastic bumpers, air bags and all the other crap they pile on just defeats the purpose and tarnishes the reputation earnes over 50 plus years. Oh Yeah, Bucket Jeeps DON'T have 4 doors!!!!!!! The Wrangler Rubicon will probably be the last real Jeep they build. Sad isn't it.

I hear you guys I'm a jeep guy 22 years now! Got a 86CJ7 a TJ and the wifes got a XJ.Lets talk about the doors the rocker panels are gone! the door goes all the way down. Great for the girls, but bash it on a rock and will you be able to open the door? The V6 is not the inline 242 I don't know don't like it! The JK is too boxey even more then the YJ.and it's too wide Now it's a fullsize! It's been the same size for years. Now then go and add 5".

As I see it the Jeep started to die when Chrysler took control of it and the Wrangler was the first big step in that direction when they went to coil over. It has been down hill since. They have tried to commercialize and main stream it so much that each year it becomes less Jeep and more yuppie SUV. Sometimes I think it would better to kill it now than watch it die a slow death. Few give AMC much credit but when they owned Jeep for for over 17 years they did more for it than anybody else did by standardizing drive trains and such and bringing out the highly successfully mini Cherokee in 84 that still would sell today if offered. They would have been better off to have killed the GC instead and replaced it with a "Liberty" style vehicle as the Liberty is no where near as simple and sturdy as the old Cherokee was.

Anyone tried driving it? Because if you do, you might change your comment. Its not only fun to drive and look at but very practical! There's a reason the sales of the Unlimited 4 door has shot up. Look into it before coming to a conclusion and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have and I have drive a lot od old jeeps when they were new and even a few when they were still Willy's. The new Jeep Unlimited 4 door is NOT a Jeep but rather a hybrid yuppie vehicle that they have successfully marketed to 4x4 wannabes. The real Jeep was a smaller, lighter and simpler vehicle with leafs and all 4 corners and very sturdy too with few creature comforts. It reached its peak as a true offroad no nonsense machine around the CJ5 series and has been slowly tail sliding since. I remember one time when I was deer hunting in Texas in 70's I heard this noise in the woods and soon a CJ5 came into view pushing its way through the brush in the woods and creek bottoms where there was no road and pulled up next to me and chatted for a bit. It turned out is was but a week old and they had bought it for ranch usage and wanted to see what it would do. They had already scratched the paint up and even managed to rip the side spare mount of as it was laying in the back of Jeep but that Jeep was doing what it was built to do unlike new ones today. (I retrace some of his trail and was amazed where he had had it) Treat a new one the same way not only will you tear it up a lot worse but like break it or at very least get it stuck with is longer less maneuverable wheel base and greater weight. Not much real Jeep left in new ones.

Of course there will never again be a jeep like the great CJ series. However for the modern era the 4-door unlimited is a step in the right direction. The longer wheel base makes it more stable with a lower COG, like you need a reason to lift it higher, and the extra doors makes it possible for full size adults to get in the back seat confortably with the top still on! Every jeep lover would like to see them come out with a cj like vehicle with a flat steel dash, bare floors, and no navigation or vanity lights. But in this day and age that wont happen. The 4-door unlimited is the best improvement they could make to improve the always classic Jeep.

I disagree. The only thing Jeep about it is name. You know Jeep had a nice 4 door SUV long ago in the name of a Wagoneer. The also had some nice sturdy full sized Cherokees too that were far more Jeep than new 4 door cob jobs. If you want 4 door get a SUV but do not cob the Jeep up even more. Let it die as a Jeep rather than something it was never meant to be.

3.8 isn't a Mitsubishi, it's been built in Trenton MI for about the last 20 or so years. Started in the mini van era. Mitsubishi is in the mid sized cars.
Bought an '07 wrangler. I miss the 4 liter, but the 3.8 was the best of the choices, outside of a redesigned inline.
