Everson, WA here.
Oh, and my axle plans have changed, for the record. Anyone doing a SAS should NOT use a Ram 1500's front axle. It's very crappy. I'm on the hunt for a Wagoneer Dana 44 w/ Driver side drop t-case/axle.
Sorry for the threadjack

Cridersville, Ohio here.
I've got a 87 Chevy 4x4 with the stock GM 10 bolt axles under it. im in the early stages of swapping the 10 bolts with a GM 14 Bolt full float and either a D44 8 lug front or a D60 front. which ever i can find around here.

Does anyone have ideas on what to do for a Chevy S-10 2.2L 4cylinder ext. cab 2wd truck. i'm 17 and i dont want to deal with selling it and buying a new one. also i cant afford to buy another one. the only problem i have is that its 2wd. i live in rhinelander, wi. and i go ice fishing alot so i would like to convert it to 4wd. how would i go about doing that?

Well, like most vehicles, you'll at least need leaf springs, a front axle, a transfer case, and possibly an adapter to get your 2WD trans to work with the transfer case. You could also do links/coils rather than leaves and/or get a new output shaft in the trans. What year is the truck?

dgman, in all honesty, without trying to discourage you from wheeling, forget about this conversion on an S10. People don't do it because the platform isn't worth spending all the time and money on such an involved conversion. Unless you have some serious fabrication skills coupled with an in-depth knowledge on suspension & chassis design, or a boatload of money to throw at this, it's not really feasable. See, with older trucks that came with solid axles on the 4wd counterparts, it's a much easier conversion because the trucks use the same frames. So all the parts, for the most part, are a bolt on affair. With a truck like yours, that never came from the factory with a solid axle on 4wd models, even if they share the same frames the only thing you could do is bolt up cheesy IFS junk. Not to mention that since S10's never came from the factory with a solid front axle, you'd have to source an axle out of a completely different vehicle and get the rear axle as well so they would share the same bolt battern. You would easily spend more money on this conversion than you would buying a truck that was already a 4wd with a solid front axle. If you like the size and feel of your truck now, my first suggestion would be an 84 or older Toyota pickup. They are an AWESOME platform to start with. Like I said, I'm not trying to discourage or disinterest you from this hobby we all love. Quite the contrary. I just wanted to tell you the truth about such a project before some other know-it-all behind a keyboard (like myself, LOL) told you it would be an easy thing to do. "Yeah, just get an axle and throw some leaf springs on it, weld 'em to the frame and throw on a t-case and you're god to go!" Sorry, not the case.
