I was looking at purchasing a 1990 chevy 3500 with a 454 engine currently in it.  Can this be swapped out for a 350 engine?  I've been yes and no and not sure who to believe.

thanks

Sure why not?

But like 86 said, why? Fuel economy I'm guessing?

YES,chevy threw the 454 in cause the 3500 was desighned for heavy duty hauling compared to 1500 and 2500 which were made for the lighter loads and the ocasional very heavy loads, but with the much improved power and torque of the 454 i would keep it,if your not doing serious hauling and wanting to save fuel economy then i could see a valid reason for the swap. As far as what you need to modify to get the 350 to fit,

Of course anything is possible, but you will need an engine out of the same vintage truck (1990 350) so that you can get all the fuel injection accessories with the motor.  You will also need to grab the computer while your at it.

Dont forget about the bell houseing having a different bolt pattern on the trannys between the two motors.....but on some years they have a removeable housing that can be converted does anybody remember what years i cant? What tranny do ya have and what one would ya like...the old school t-400 or t-350 or the 700r4 with that fancy overdrive? options options options...after ya' answer that we can get a little further cause it will be a issue if your tranny is set up for 454 bolt pattern!

Actually Diesel, not to be disrespectful in any manner, but your info is a little off here.  Any 90 degree Chevy motor, pretty much all big block and small block motor shares the same bolt pattern for bell housings.  You could take a Turbo 400 right off of a 350 and bolt it up to the 454 without any modification whatsoever.  The General had their stuff together when they designed all this stuff, that's for sure.  That's also the same reason you could take a brand new Allison tranny from behind a new chevy or GMC truck and put it right behind an old 350 without any MECHANICAL difficulties.  IT would be an electrical nightmare, but that's a discussion for another time
