You should be able to fit a 31 on that vehicle stock no problem.

Not really, no. IIRC, the mountaineer came with 29x9.50 tires. You'd need about 2" of lift to fit 31s without having to trim. Anything that fits Explorers will fit the mountaineer of similar vintage.

The andysautosport.com wheel/tire previewer is generally VERY accurate when it comes to tire sizes and lift heights. This is 31" tires with 2" of lift:

Wrong. On a '97 and newer A-Arm Explorer you can fit up to a 33/10.5 on it STOCK. Just like on the Ranger Edge and 4x4.

So yes, 31s would fit. I think it would be tight depending on the tire, since there is so much variation per brand. Some 31s are 31" tall, some or smaller, and some are bigger.

And? I've seen 33/10.5's on 4x4 and Edge Ranger's for years and years, and they are exactly the same suspension wise/A-Pillar forward. What you posted is just like a lift company saying that they can only fit a 35" with an 8" lift on an half ton when we all now damn well you can fit a 40".

Anyway...

Didn't the Edge sit higher than standard Rangers?

The largest tire available on the Rangers were 31s. (source: http://www.fordf150.net/specs/04ranger.php)

On Mountaineers (and subsequently, Explorers), it was the metric equivalent of 29x9.50. (source: http://www.carsdirect.com/research/specs?cat=2&make=ME&modelid=177&acode=USB10MES011A0&year=2001)

Yes, they do. And so do Explorers. It's because of the Torsion Bar front suspension set up. They never offered a coil spring Explorer after '97, they all went to torsion bars, and the Ranger followed suit with the 4x4's and TrailHead in '98 and Edge in '01.

Ok, so if the Ranger had a max tire size of 31" with the off road suspension package, why didn't the Explorer get a 31" tire option from the factory if it had the same suspension?

Beats me, I wasn't in the marketing meeting at Ford when they decided what tire to put on from the factory. I just know what fits after the fact.
