I've had enough problems with the THM 700 R4 in my S15. I think I'm going for a 4 speed standard. How hard is the assembly from auto to standard ? I'm going to utilise the local bone yards. Or will a THM400 or THM350 fit my V-6 4.3 engine ?

What year is your S15? I'm going to guess it is an earlier model 700R4? If I were you, I would check with some performance tranny shops in your area. There are so many things that can be done to the 700R4 now that have solved all of those early issues that GM was having with them. And it's really not that expensive compared to what other tranny rebuilds cost these days. I would go that route before swapping over to a SM465 for sure.

It's not a hard swap at all but what kind of problems are you having? I would stick with the 700R4

how bout some more info on the truck before we start blaming the tranny........is it lifted? big tires? correctly adjusted TV cable? burnt fluid? dirt filter? ......... the 700r4 isn't really a bad tranny anymore and espicially not in a little truck like yours......

Well I made the mistake once by throwing the 700 out to place in a 465. I wouldn't do it again I will say that. If you want a manual trans, go with the NV4500. But they will cost you alot more than what you could rebuild the 700 for twice over and still be ahead if you stayed with the 700 in the long haul. The 89 700 that is in it, if rebuilt right with or without a shift kit which is stupid to install anyway with all the available updated goodies in the newer 4L65E, get this, they are interchangeable on most parts. Plus the 65 has the 5 gear planetaries to make the 700 stronger. Just gotta know the right parts to install and you can make the 700 a really trick trans if you do the research or know some tranny shop that knows how to do it. Good luck and hope you don't jump the gun and change out the 700 for something that is actually worse on mileage and overall performance. You'd end up spending money on drivelines, mounts, crossmember, clutch linkage, etc. Waste...
