My take on it would be to look where the pick up tube is and work up from there, ime thinking ooollld shcool here but if there was a way to isolate where the suction apparatus? would be, to sump it there and put some kind of "lid" on the area so the fluid would mostly stay in one area, ime not to up on trannys but ime sure one of the mods or other wheelers has an idea of the guts n workings of the type of tranny ya have. it prolly isnt a tube per say, but some filter plugged into the valvebody area is where to start looking. my departure angle sucked, i always got left hanging by the trailer hitch. i wonder if there isnt a service bulletin on the tranny, the only thing i can think of is the fluid flow was interrupted somewhere n how.it is a pretty steep angle!

If I remember correct the filter and pickup is one piece that secures to the valve body via a bolt. This assembly is located in the center of the pan/valve body. The 4WD filter has a square pickup. And the 2WD filter has a round pickup. I do not know about depth on either one. All I know is the 2WD filter does not work. I would like to find out why. If I could fab a tube to move the pickup to another location or lower it somehow that may solve the problem. I would still want to install a baffle front and rear of the pickup. The last thing I want to do is solve the problem going up the hill. Only to create a problem on the downhill.
I really need to take the pan off and look at it. However if I can find a good pic of the A4LD like a technical speck that would help.
Here is an idea. Overfill the trans a little. But how much that is the question. I know if it is filled too much it can damage it/and or lose fluid.
