Goodbye Explorer!

The Explorer has finally left our property. With the purchase of my latest ride (the Durango), I have no need for the Explorer. I was originally going to V8 swap it and run some 31s, but I was afraid that it would cost massive $$ and other parts wouldn't be up to the stress. The Durango already come with a V8 and 31s from the factory, so it was a natural choice.

I gave the Explorer away, free of charge, to a friend of mine. He totally scored, since he also got $600 worth of fiberglass thrown in for free. I'm going to miss that truck, but there's nothing but good times ahead for me and the 'Rango. I've already come close to rolling it, I've jumped it once, and backed over a tree (mind you all of this was by accident, but still...). I've got a year worth of awesome stories in just over a week already.

What year was the Ex? '91-'94 has better driveline hardware under it than the Durango (the axles in particular).

The Dodge already having the V8 does save you the work of swapping engines though. But wheel it hard enough and you'll be finding the IFS will need to go too.

It was a '91. As far as axles themselves go, the 'Rango is a little better, but the IFS does have its drawbacks.

Explorer: Front(Dana 35), rear (8.8")
Durango: Front (Dana 35), rear (9.25")

The Durango will realistically be a daily driver. For that, it's about a million times nicer than the Explorer. The TTB-equipped Explorers rode like covered wagon. The suspension seemed to have a hatred toward compression. The 'Rango likes to wallow a little when it's pushed to its suspension limits, but I rarely push it that hard.

I was mostly referring to how the Explorer doesn't have CV axles up front, has a hi-pinion differential (stronger up front vs. a lo-pinion), and that the TTB suspension has much more flex and travel potential when modified too.

The rear is almost a wash, with both having 31 spline shafts, although the 9.25's gears should be a bit stronger. I don't think there are quite as many ratio choices available for it though.

Sounds like you made a decent choice though. Being 8 years newer I would expect the Dodge to be more dependable as a DD.

Well yet again, I got her stuck beyond belief last night, pics soon to come. I buried it almost up to the headlights on the passenger side when I found a little patch of quick sand down by the river. The driver side really didn't get too buried. I ripped off a safety chain loop on the hitch trying to get it unstuck. Also tore off the front license plate, but that was an easy fix to get it back on.
