I have a tired 97 F150 with a 4.6L V8 and 195,000 miles on it.  I was thinking of maybe swapping in a 351/trans/transfer case from a older donor vehicle.  I know it's doable but if I am going to the trouble anyway, is there a better swap?  I have the feeling I would be better off selling the truck that I have and get a different truck.

Why do you want the do the swap? Is engine bad or looking for more performance?

I would like more power.  The engine is currently running ok, the trans slips a little.  The truck is reliable and a everyday driver but I know I have some repairs coming that I need to budget for. If I have to do repairs anyway, more power would be nice.

The reason I said this is that a 4.6 is not a bad motor and more modern and efficient than a 351. If 4.6 is sound you can find what you are looking for with axle regearing. Those trucks are geared pretty tall stock and if it is lifted/running big tires performance will lag. Many do not realize how much a proper set of axle gears can "wake" a 4x4 up until they have done it. Deeper gears also reduce tranny strain while bigger engine increases it.

I sold my F150 today, and will start the search for it's replacement.  I want to find something with a straight axle or a better candidate for a straight axle conversion.
