Well the CTD would overload and over power frame and axles (it weighs about 1200lbs) As far as what best option here is depends on what you have and what you want to do with it.

if you were to do it, go with the trusty old 12 valve and your gonna have to beef up the front end and rear axle, so basicly you'd be changing your entire driveline tranny and Tcase included

I would have serious reservations about frame in the truck with a 1200 lb CTD in it. Not a good marriage.

your talking about putting a medium duty motor in a 1/2 ton pick up!!! not a good idea.......im sure there is a way to super or turbo charge the 5.8 keep it in there or swap in a 460 but not a giant cummins.....if you put in the cummins you would basically be rebuilding the truck to suit the motor
solid axle chevys cant be beat 78 K5: 350 V8,700r4,np208, 8 lug D44 4:88, 14 bolt 10.5 4:88 with detroit locker and 35 inc parenelli jones dirt grip tires

People have put Cummins' in these trucks before, the frames aren't nearly as weak as people like to make them out to be.

You are more generous then I am. That frame is not that strong and between engine weight and counter torque from engine you are asking for trouble. What would make a nice fit would be if you could find a old 4 cyl CTD (a CTD 360 minus two cylinders) that was used in old military Jeep truck in 70's and early 80's. It would take considerable boost if you wanted to boost it and 250 HP and over 450 FT lbs of torque would be quite doable with it. It would be more thrifty MPG wise than 5.9 CTD and weigh a lot less too.

finding a 4cl CTD in anchorage might be a problem. ive shoped around and i cant find a super or tubocharger that is a direct fit to my truck. If I was to go turbo what would i have to do to the engine. whould a stroker kit be an option?

I think your money and effort would be better spent up there on some deeper axle gears. If this truck is stock ratio was and has been lifted and has bigger tires, deeper axle gears will wake it up a lot and reduce strain on drive line too. Nice thing about this kind of mod that it can actually extend life of drive line rather than reduce it when you super or turbo charge a engine which can add problems of its own (cooling, high octane fuel all the time and tranny issues to name a few)
