I didn't forget y'all, even though it might have started to look that way. I've been real busy and haven't had the time to be online. Here are the latest updates with me and the Outback:

She's was going strong in the ice and snow. Launched it off a few snow piles in parking lots. Then slid it sideways into a concrete berm at 25-30 mph the day before we got real snow. Bent a rim to hell, kinked a lateral link the IRS. The new part is in at the dealership, but it's too flooded to get there.

My plans haven't changed a whole lot, just got a little more exagerated. I'm figuring out a way to lift the Outback 4". The lift, combined with fender/bumper trimming, should be able to fit 31" tires! I'm also going to fabricate a winch bumper/brush guard for it.

That's how things stand up to this point.

Forgot to add: the Explorer still sits in my driveway with fiberglass hood/fenders with no grill or lights. I will be badging it as a Mercury Mountaineer and I have a person who's hooking me up with a Mountaineer grill and headlights.

Also, I found a guy who might be able to make a 6" lift for the Outback.

Cool!  It sounds like a modern version of Poject AMC Eagle that Four Wheeler did eons ago.

New info as of 02/01/09:

The ej25 4 cyl motor is destroyed right now. Due to improper installation, the timing belt slipped off and caused a chain reaction of damage. I'm in the process of pulling the motor and trans out right now. I always thought it would be cool to do an STi swap, and I think that's the route I'll go. I'm split between either getting a good deal on a cheap Japanese-spec turbo 2.0 and dealing with all the wiring and OBD hassles (Japanese engines don't have emission monitoring for OBD reading), or spend around $2000 more, get a US-spec turbo 2.5 and have the install end up being a little easier. I'd love to get a USDM motor and trans, since I'll get a 6 speed with electronic torque split control (Subaru's system is called DCCD), but it will be expensive. The DCCD is hard to wire up, but if left unwired, it just works as a mechanical center diff with 50/50 torque split. I might go with a WRX 5 spd if the STi 6 spd doesn't work out.

At this time, I'm rethinking lifting my current Outback. I might buy an older Outback once I finish this round of projects, however, and build a sweet, custom long travel double a-arm system front and rear and go baja-style with some fiberglass fender and quarter panel flares.
