Howdy all.
Looking for some advice on new shocks for my rig. Its an '02 extended cab TRD 4x4 with the v6, manual tranny, and tow package. I've added a Leer fiberglass canopy for overnighting and roof racks for toting jon boats, canoes, bikes, etc. No lift yet but hopefully someday. Its mainly my daily driver and most of my driving is local and highway but I get off-road time in when I can.
With 80k miles I'm ready (waaay overdue) to replace the stock Bilsteins with...something. I really like the look (and flexibility) of the Rancho RS9000XL series but a) They're pretty pricey, and b) May actually be more shock than I really need (but man are they sweet). I've looked at the RSX17000 series for the front, coupled with the RS5000s on the rear (I don't seem to be able to find the 17000s for a rear shock application)....or just RS5000s all around. I just figure for a couple bucks more (each) I could get what appears to be a better shock on the front. I looked at various ProComp units as well and, while some of them seem a little more affordable, I just don't know much about them. Since the front shocks are stock coilover units, I know I need something comparable there. The only unit that specifically states made for coilover apps is the Rancho RS5000 (RAN-RS5762) although specs for others say they're for front-end use. I've been looking on the web and in-store at Summit Racing and 4WheelParts mainly but have been to the other usual suspects like NAPA, Advance, AutoZone, etc. looking too.
I'm not sure where I stand on the monotube vs twin (or triple) tube issue but it seems like the monos are more vulnerable to damage - dent one and its done for - so I guess I'm leaning more toward the twin-tube design. My stock Bilsteins are monotube and didn't give me any problems I guess but they just always looked so skinny and spindly down there that I thought they were gimpy. Performance-wise I have nothing to compare them to or really complain about. Price-wise, excluding what appears to be the low-end stuff, 3 to 5 hundred bucks - give or take - looks like the average range.
Does anyone have good experiences, horror stories, or advice of any kind? I'm really at the bottom end of the food chain here and don't have anyone in my immediate circle of family, friends, coworkers, or whatnot that I can ask about this. Aside from flashy ad-copy and industry geek-speak...I've got no clue where to start. Just a lot of options and too much potential to throw money down the hole.

Personally, I would put another set of Bilsteins on there.
I've run stock, bilstien, rancho, pro comp, and now race shocks on my truck, and for what you are doing, I would stick with Bils, those are what I have always liked the best.

Sounds like a plan. As I'd said in my original post...I don't have any reason to change brands but with so many other options out there it makes you wonder if there's something better. They're a little more reasonably priced than some of the others too.
Thanks for the advice and quick response.
