i want to put a diesel into my 71 ford f/100.  how hard would this be? i mean i know that it may not fit and lots of custom fab would be done but i think it would be neat to throw a deisel in something like that, i mean you dont see it hardly.  Just wanted to know if anyone has done this or similar that can give tips or hints or something.  prolly wont happen anytime soon and just lookin to see what yall think.

Well personally I see no benefit for it in a off road machine. Not just because gas has been cheaper than diesel for a few years now but also because it add about 400 to 700 lbs to front end axle load (depending on want you are upgrading from and too) and extra weight is not a asset off road.

ya, very true, but i have seen some pretty neat deisel trucks in the offroad world.  Also gas isnt a problem, father in law has an unlimited supply of red fuel from the rigs so he has a few drums at all times around the shop.  in addition to the weight tho, i would think that it would have enough power to balance it out the weight.  and it particularly doesnt have to be for this truck, i just think that it would be kind of neat to put a newerish diesel in a real old truck.

I have seen a lot of buried diesel trucks off road to in person and on web flicks. Especially some CTD power ones in mud holes. Their owners just do not seem to get the fact that if yo want to play in deep mud, you do not want a 1300 lb motor up front. It make a great boat anchor in deep mud and makes it harder to extract too.

ya theres this guy that actually lives here in my hometown and he put a newer 90's cummins into an older 70's c10 pickup, though its not a off road truck it still looks pretty clean as a low rider and a great concept idea for an older truck build up

Funky, I knew many guys back in CA that had swapped CTDs into older rigs.  One guy swapped one into a 78 ford with a 94 dash also and it looked awesome.  Here's the thing though, as others have pointed out, these motors are extremely heavy!  If you are just wanting one for crawling, then they are hard to beat.  For any kind of mud bogging, forget about it unless you are willing to throw a bunch of money at it to get to around 7-800 hp to be effective enough to counter the extra weight.  Now, that being said, if you were talking about putting a turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel into something like a Toyota pick up, or a jeep, or a samurai, then you'd be onto something.  If you can get a mechanically injected diesel, they are truly the hot set up for a rock crawler.  No electrical needed at all, they can run upside down, put a high snorkel on it and you can use it as a submarine!  Plus, as everyone knows, the off-idle torque of a diesel is unrivaled by ANY gasoline engine.  So, in short, find the right motor/vehicle combo, and it will be unstoppable.
