yeah a 350 or 400 will work just fine, what trans is in the truck now?? But don't expect a trans to survive under abusive conditions just cuz its a good trans, you need to make sure you have a good cooler on it in conjunction with radaitot cooler and make sure you don't have really tall gears for tire size cuz that will cause lots of extra slip and heat in the tranny
solid axle chevys cant be beat 78 K5: 350 V8,700r4,np208, 8 lug D44 4:88, 14 bolt 10.5 4:88 with detroit locker and 35 inc parenelli jones dirt grip tires

Shift kits do not make trannies run any cooler and they are more for ego than anything. Shifts are modulated for a reason as it reduces shock on engine and tranny. Basically though trannies fail in lifted 4x4 not because of type or lack of a shift kit but usually because of lack or proper axle gears which forces tranny to ride torque converter stall a lot and slow bake. Some never seem to get this though and always blame the tranny. Some many trannies and so much down time could be saved if people would just properly regear axles with lifts and big tires.

What gear I would recommend depends on truck and tire size but generally with a GM OD tranny I suggest dividing tire size by 7.2 to get axle ratio. With a non OD tranny figure on about tire size divided by 8 as a compromise. On real axle, if this is a GM truck with a 4l60 I would suggest you upgrade rear axle to a GM 14 bolt 9.5 semi floater as it is about the equal of a D60 and can be had with 6 or 8 lug hubs. It is often overlooked.

for example if your running 33's run 4.10 gears, 35s run 4.56 gears, 37/38's run 4.88 and anything bigger is 5.13-5.72... though with a 350 I wouldnt run anything bigger than 38"s... for fuel mileage a built 700r4 might be a better choice. you might also want to run an extra trans cooler and install a trans temp guage, B&M makes a good one( has color ranges for easy reference)

dude if your 15 its gonna take you some 4 years to pay for gears, tranny, axles ..... stick to what you got right now until it breaks and save money cuz this crap aint cheap

Not with a OD tranny... Figure on 4.56 for 33's, 4.88 for 35's and 5.13 for 38's. This will give you best possible MPG with lift. (if you really want best MPG, do not lift and run street tires because all of this adds drag and uses extra fuel not matter what "gear" you run)

T400 a shift kit and tranny cooler you should be good to go. The less the tranny slips with a shift kit the less the heat the less the burning of the clutches. Big cams and auto trannies don't mix well, You might also have to lossen up your converter.
Or you build your 350 if that's what you have
