well i finally got around to working on this thing again and im confused on the intake situation. the stock intake is a heavy cast iron thing, i don't like it, i have an edelbrock aluminum performer rpm dual plane intake and and offenhauser aluminum single plane intake, it was previuously mentioned that standard chevy intakes won't fit the center bolt heads but i placed the offy intake on the heads today to see if it would fit and it fits fine, all the holes line up and everything! like perfect just like the stock cast iron intake does, so im gonna pull off my edelcbrock intake later and test fit it on these center bolt heads as well to see if it fits as well, if they both fit which would be they best choice the edelbrock or the offenhauser?

do you have 4 holes or 6 per side in the edelbrock? if its 4 it should be for the vortec 350 and I choose the edelbrock but the offy is probably just as good.play around with the intake gasket and see if you can do some porting of the intake on the both the manifold and heads.might get better flow and power too.

well it turns out my heads arn't vottec's, thier just center bolt heads but all 3 of my intakes have 6 bolts so im guessing the offy and edelbrock will both work, im probabley gonna go with the edelbrock.......

now that ive got the motor together what timing advace should i run it at? i ran 8degrees advance on my old motor but that thing had lower compression, this motor has 58cc chamber aluminum heads with liek 9:1 compression so is 8 btdc with mid grade gas still doable will it ping? what about 6 btdc?

come on guys i just need some timing advice......please .......btw i gave my engine bay a nice coat of black paint, nothing fancey but gave it a nice new and clean look, also welded a crack in front crossmember and welded up rivits so they wouldn't loosen after all the off road vibration and abuse, then i set the motor in with new motor mounts as well

Geo, you need to be careful with the compression on this thing. 58 cc is SMALL! For example, flat tops with 64cc heads will come in above 9.5 to 1 compression ratio. You really don't want to go above 10 to 1 on pump gas. Now, with aluminum heads, that gives you a little safety room because of how well they dissipate the heat. I'm a small block chevy guy, and I don't even use a timing gun when I set the advance on my motors. I just advance the timing till I hear it start to ping, then I back it off a little and re-adjust the idle speed back down to about 700 rpm. Then I test drive it. Usually, when I put a light on it, it comes in around 12 BTDC. Also, for off roading, you do not want any type of square bore carb on your rig. Those are for street machines. You want a spread bore carb. I prefer the Q-jet, but I have heard good things about the Holley truck avenger as well (not sure if it is spread bore or square bore). I have had the best luck with the Edelbrock series of Q-jets. They are awesome right out of the box. They have small primaries and HUGE secondaries and are rated upwards of 750, but the small primaries are the key here. I would sell any square bore carb that you have. You can tell the difference on a square bore carb by turning it upside down. All 4 barrels will be the same size. On a spread bore carb like the Q-Jet, the secondary barrels are MUCH bigger than the primaries. Good luck!
