Hi ya'all, new guy here, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I recently picked up an '85 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban, bone stock and she is tired with over 300,000 miles. I'm looking at the  RamJet 350 Crate Engine PFI with Iron Vortec Heads 12499120. I'd rather have a fuel injection setup for efficiency and mountain wheeling. Has anybody used that engine and setup? Any *** or gripes? I also want to replace or upgrade the tranny and transfer case, but have no clue where to start looking for those parts. They will obviously need to be beefed up, so any suggestions in that dept would be helpful too. Gears will definately be installed eventually, though I'm not sure what ratio to go with, just a good highway/offroad compromise.

ok, thanks again for your time.

Bad thing about Vortec heads is that while they are strong above 3000 RPM, the are not at their best below that. This is something to consider if you do not plan to wind it out a lot and want max lower RPM torque. You mentioned mountains, if you live at high elevation or travel a lot too it you want to gear lower than you would at sea level as this helps make up for loss of power. Myself I am kinda fond of 350 TBI motor. I have one in a 89 burb I bought new that has over 180K on it now and it has been cross country over a dozen times in its life and spent a lot of time above 5000 feet too (been up Pike Peak twice) The reason I like the TBI is because the head provide good low end torque and response and the setup also allows you to easily reset base line timing for better high altitude operation.(it is a very old trick that helps a lot) Modern Vortec FI engine do not offer these and ignition has limitations of how much ECM can advance it in thin air.
