depends what the damage is exactly, hell you can buy a complete Ls1 corvette motor for less than that and swapp it, might as well swap a viper motor or a cummins diesel if your going to pay that much.

Maybe a used LS1 (if you are lucky)but not new. A new Viper or CTD engine would cost far more than that and CTD would weight over twice as much as stock engine. On a engine change you are likely going to have over 1000 just in labor. Also if engine was running and it ingested water it could have done serious internal damage because water is not very compressible. At this stage you options are finding another good bone yard 4.0 to swap in (which I suggest) or get a new one and chalk this up to a expensive learning experience that Jeeps do not float like boats nor do they make good submarines.

did ya drain the oil/water mix? if not, do that and put fresh oil in. then remove the spark plugs and turn the motor over (this squeezes the water out of the cylanders). put in some fresh plugs and see if she'll turn over. if it runs, change the oil again, after you get it to temp (to be sure all the water is removed). some other problems you might encounter are the cps (crank position sensor) may need replaced. try that first before spending the $6000

I hydro-locked a 4.3 in a ZR2 Sonoma back in '94 ...bent a rod like an "L" !!! I tried to file a warranty claim, changed the oil, pressure washed real good, etc, They were wise to my tricks! They politely advised me to try an insurance claim! I shoulda had my butt kicked!

A hydrolock can do some serious internal damage especially if you have RPM up a bit too. Also as bad as it is with a gas motor it is even worse with a diesel due to much higher CR. You so not want to injest water in any engine  for sure but even a small amount of water that a gas motor can survive can thoroughly wreck a oil burner.

yeah i know i may exaggerate a little, the viper motor is a stretch on price, but finding the rollover donor vehicles wouldnt be too hard for the other swapps.  Back to reality though, if it is just some rods bent or whatnot, and the block isnt cracked or severly damaged, a rebuild, if you do it your self shouldnt cost more than 1000-1500 ( rods pistons valve job oil pump rod and main bearings cam, you could basicly replace all your internals.) They are going to charge you 3000-4000 in labor for the job.  If you cant do it find someone who know engines and pay them half to do it as a side job.

This will be a lesson well learned i'm sure. You need some nose plugs! I'll bet next time you'll dip yer big toe in the water before ya dive in head first!!!

Personally if the force was great enough to bend the rods or crack heads or break pistons I would scrap the whole engine and not fix it as it may not be very true anymore. (crankshaft or block)

I'm one who has had many many experiences with hydrolocked engines, unless it was turning over 3000rpm, likely all ya need is to pull the air filter, plugs, oil pan plug and oil filter,

start taping the starter or better yet use a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft to turn the engine over untill all the water is shot out of the engine via the spark plug holes, refill the oil and install the new filter crank it over till ya get some oil pressure while lisening for abnormal noises. reinstall the spark plugs and it will start.

The dealer sounds a little pricey, most of that is probabaly labor. If you do what Mud and the other guys stated earlier and the engine works great. If you need a new engine you canget a new 4.0 liter from Quadratec for $2000 or even a 4.6 liter Stroker for $3700, put it in yourself and be done. The best option is like stated by Tubeblazer is to find a doner vehical.

you can easily build a nice motor with all the extra goodies for less than half of what the dealer will charge to fix yours.

Find a motor or a whole jeep to get the motor out of and you will be way ahead.  If you could find someone to Do the stuff for you then you would be way ahead.  I got friends that do motors (i don't like too) and if i bring over everything to thier place and a 12 pack.  They would just about put it together and put it in while i watch and hand tools.  Then give them a hundred bucks and everyone had a nice weekend.  I got the whole top end of my nissan motor redone for 90 bucks and the motor out of a truck that i paid 100 bucks for.  But if he calls for a hand to set the motor in the s series blazer i have to help.
