ok I just charged 2 packs of 9.6 volt 4200 pack for the slash. I can't wait to finally test this thing out. Sorry Art, I just don't see myself investing in a whole new battery system when my other 2 rigs have perfectly fine batteries

Yeah I wouldn't dump much money into a 2wd either

slash is fun! almost as fun as my RC18.
I got a 83 tooth spur and a 25 pinon. Other than not being able to climb up a curb, this thing is pretty fast and controllable. Couldn't find any paddles tires for pismo, so it will not go with me.

Just get the Pro-line slash beadlocks or original slash Traxxas wheels -not Slayer type- and put Panther paddles on them. Same set-up I'm running and they fit well within the Slash fenders.
I got my chassis plates cut out and have some time tonight so my Slash TT may be going after all.

So looks like I should get a 6800Kv motor. The site said that a 7700Kv with 9.6volt is too much.

Too much what? Fun?!?! You should gear down a bit to keep the motor cool. should be no higher than 140 degrees at all times. That's pretty much how you gear BL motors.

explain gearing down. should i go back to teh 86 or 90 tooth spur and a lower number pinon?

7700kv would indeed be a lot especially for a 2wd
stupid fast is fun at first, but then it gets really old, ask me how I know

Art it's easier to control stupid fast when it's 1/10 scale. I can't see myself doing a BL on the 18, you just cannot control the dang thing.

I think you misunderstand brushless Spencer, brushless by itself doesn't make it fast, just efficient. its the high KV that make it stupid fast.
my second 18 I'm building up with probably a 6000kv motor so its not as ballistic as my 8k. I'm also going to a nicer novak setup that uses a sensored motor, so it should perform better
brushless IS good, the motors don't really need maintenance, last longer, and provide much better runtimes.. that's all seperate than the kv stuff

I get the KV rating, but I just don't see a need to go to a BL set up when a normal brushed set up is plenty fast. Every person I talked to at the hobby shop said a BL on a 1/8 is not necessary because it becomes way too fast for you to do anything ohter then drive in a stright line. Sure you can tune it down, but why waste the money when you can get the same performace with a brushed motor for 20 bucks a pop.

Gearing down means either a smaller pinion or a larger spur. Both will have the effect of putting less strain on the motor and making more torque. It will make the motor run cooler and cut the top speed down to a manageable level.
I have run up to 8000Kv motors on my 1/18t and it is ridiculous! Pretty much controlled chaos the entire time. You have to really know how to drive to have the most fun with it.
A 5600 Kv motor is quite a bit faster than the stock motor, yet still manageable to drive. The nice thing about having a throttle is that you don't have to pull it all the way. Once you learn that, driving fast cars becomes a lot easier. The other benefit is a lot longer run times. We used to drive for nearly 1/2 hour on a 1400 Lipo doing easily 30 mph. Imagine the power of the Slash in half the size.
I reverted to a stock 370 motor for awhile but got sick of replacing them when dirt got in the brushes or it took a hard hit after launching off the handicap ramp.

hmm I don't think you get it still, brushless itself doesn't mean fast - you can get a brushless motor that's fast, or that's slow, there are different KV motors depending on application. For a hobby shop to say that "brushless is too fast" is silly because its the high kv motors that are fast, not the brushless system.
Brushless is superior to brushed in pretty much every way - they require no maintenance or brushes to replace, no rewinding, they run cooler, last way longer, and are much more efficient, it has nothing to do with speed
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I heart brushless if you are serious about your electric rig, brushless IS the way to go, regardless of if you want to go fast or slow
I do like how brushed motors look though..

looks like I own two novak ESC's now..
anybody want to buy my sidewinder micro brushless setup for 18t? it comes with a 10 dollar cooling heatsink, let me know!
