Hello everyone. My husband and i have a kfx 400 which we lost the key to so we hot wired it. After riding at the river for a while and going through alittle water (nothing major) the 4-wheeler shut off and will not crank. It's getting gas and firing. We were told that hot wiring it could have shorted out the "brain box" of the 4 wheeler, is this possible? Any other suggestions??
HELP PLEASE!!

I kinda doubt that, I'd think it would have fried it then and there so ya wouldn't have gotten to ride at all
the water may be the problem, from the crank position sensor.

I would go to www.z400central.com before ATV rider for the KFX (same bike as an LTZ)
It could be any number of things. Is the battery fully charged? Is the starter cranking at all? If the starter is cranking but not the engine did you check the starter bolts (prone to fail on these bikes)? Did you recheck the wires on the hot wire job? Make sure a ground didn't come loose? How about that silly 20amp fuse by the battery (I've blown that one before)? It could be any number of things on that bike, but I doubt the CDI is dead, if that were the case you shouldn't be getting any spark at all.
I have an LTZ 400 and the full service manual so if you need to know something specific let me know and I can look it up.

Thanks for the info. The battery is fully charged, the starter is turning over, the wires are good and the fuse is good. It does backfire when we try to crank it but the engine just won't start.....ugh!! Maybe the timing???
