You could but you need one that has about 15 PSI when flowing and then hooked to a regulator the bypasses extra fuel back to tank and maintains 9.5 to 10 PSI for injectors. One of the reasons it is in the tank is to help cool it.

You MUST regulate pressure at injectors. 9.5 to 10 PSI. If it is not, mixtures will be all out of whack. TBI works on theory that it has a known amount of fuel injected vs pulse duration (because of fixed pressure) and ECM can control fuel. This is not a carb and pressure needs to be pretty steady.

well i know what you are saying im a certified ford tech for 11 years but a chevy man at heart and understand what you are saying but i am looking at a schematic and it does not show a regulator is not a part of tbii thought it was controlled there

It is on the back of TBI unit. Line pressure for pump is spec'ed at 14 to 17 PSI max and regulated to 9.5 to 10 PSI for injectors. The reason for this setup is regualtor assures good flow and constant pressure when down converted for a higher line pressure plus it bypasses and returns fuel to tank to help keep fuel cooler and minimize chance of vapor lock on a very hot day. (I have seen it happen though a few times even with TBI under right conditions)

If all you are doing is replacing the pump you should be fine using the stock hardware since the system already has a regulator.
