for all the guys that have been wheeling with me, would there be anyplace we have been that an H2 would not be able to go?

I would say both rigs are capable except the weaker front end on the H2. the big wildcard is the nut behind the wheel......

I owned a scout about 25 years ago. There is no real comparison here. The Scout is a real no nonsense 4x4 that was well built and the H2 is kinda a toy Tonka truck on steroids made to look fancy and catch your eye but is a product of the some of parts from lowest bidder. Also because of scouts smaller size it will go places H2 will not and be easier to extract when it get stuck and a lot harder to break too. The only thing that was really wrong with those old scouts was that they did not paint and seal body panels on inside (they were bare steel) and the bodies tended to rust out badly over time.

i know i have talked about diesel and stuff but i also like the idea of something i can take family and friends wheeling in and also have a nice driver at the same time, not worried about missing hardcore stuff since i do have another scout in pieces in my backyard that i will need to be able to tow once it gets put togethor.

They made Scout Traveler for several years in 70's which was a stretched Scout (not talking about IH Travelall) I imagine that those are getting pretty scarce these days.

I am kinda the opposite, I like the old stuff better. I would take a totally restored 35 year old 4x4 over a new one any day. Maybe it is because I remember driving them when they were new since I have been owning and driving them since about 1970. I remember when 4x4 was a very rare bird on a lot.

the H2 fuel milage cant be that great either. it also has the notorious chevy tie rod problem.
the problem with 20+ year old vehicles is they brake all the time. its always one thing or another. im sure brian understands.
what MPG does the xterra get???
02 TJ with lots of extra junk

i like the H2 cus it can stuff a 35" tire stock and would require no mods for what i want to do with it, if i bought a tahoe it wouldn't have the same brakes and rear axle under it and would need a lift kit. i am tired of the old car thing, they are cool but when they are what you rely on as a daily driver they are no good for that.

Get an xterra or 4 runner with a rear locker.
You can stuff 33 or 34 in the Xterra with coil spacers and a shackle.
If you want fuel economy, I would stay away from big tires.
Kev I posted links with MPG for the Xterra and a V8 4runner in the MPG tread

You mean I have to sell my Unimog??
I think the ability of any rig ...old or new is not dependent on the age but rather the way it has been maintained and its use relative to its intended purpose. An old scout that has been taken care of and had preventative maintained done all its life should be reliable. It may be costly with gas as it is, but should be dependable. On the other hand if you take a stock H2 out and go rock crawling with it the tie rods will snap.....
to me the age of the rig is not the problem....

after talking to my wife, mpg is not the center of our universe when it comes to buying a car and i can find an 03-04 H2 for under 20k

no you don't have to seel the unimog, if it is worth it to you what you have to deal with keeping something like that on the road then go for it, i am just tired of trying to keep up with old trucks.

While i agree it does not have to be the "center" of your universe. It seems to me IMO it would be thoughtless to not consider it and at least move in an environmentally and economic direction. You realize the H2 EPA ratings are 11-12mph on GAS. so it will probably be lower...
since that is the case it should be a buyers market with H2s.....give it a year or two they should be paying you to take them....
Moggy looks like a gas guzzling oversized beast..but was bought with the idea of doing biodiesel/veggy oil.
