FourWheeler Web Editor: Dude... you're still WRONG. There is NOTHING the same about a swing axle and TTB/TIB... Guess we're going to need a lesson in TTB...
TTB is a swing axle dude.... It is about as high tech as the rear drive axle in a 47 VW bug. While VW's axles "swing off side of transaxle the TTB swings off a break/hinge in middle. Very primitive indeed.

Dude, you are way over simplifying it. TTB is a complex system, not a swing axle.

I really don't think it matters, if its TTB or Independent Front Sissyfiction, they both suck, and if its a 2000 F150 it should have IFS like the Chevys do

Just for the record, you are over complicating it. It is a very primitive design with a lot of quirks and stability issues. It is nothing more than a axle with a hinge in the middle and radius arms to keep it in truck as the axle swings on the pivot which is bolted to truck frame. The only thing complex about is the BS that tries to make it into something more than it really is, a swing axle front end that can have wild camber and track width changes and shorter tire life because of its primitive design. Ford finally quietly completely scraped its use after Explorer roll over lawsuits because this primitive design helped it tuck and roll on tire failure. (though they never openly admitted it)

It is somewhat stronger only because is simple design but this is not to say that a IFS could not be built nearly bullet proof. It is all in how much money and materiel Detroit wants to spend/use when they design and build a IFS front drive axle.

I still say they should go back to solid axles. 60% of people who buy 4x4s buy them for capability not on-road comfort. Not to mention with the advancements in aftermarket suspensions a solid axle can ride just as good as an IFS unit.

Honestly no solid axle setup can match the handling and ride of a IFS setup no matter what you do because only one wheel reacts to bump and camber is held more constant. (with a solid axle when one wheel in moved it does effect other) Plus there is less mass to dampen with IFS. IFS could be built bullet proof even for off road with big tires and with stock tires most IFS's are pretty bullet proof from factory. Also one of the flaws of solid axles is lack of a CV joint at knuckle which causes torque whip in tight turns because Ujoints are not constant in velocity when bent. IFS is nice about this. I can tell you from years of pushing snow that IFS CV's has it all over solid axle in smooth power and steering even is sharp turns under power pushing a big load and it spoils you. If they would just spend a few more bucks and design a solid axle with a CV in knuckle it would be a good compromise. I would also add that probably 90% of 4x4's bought are never used off road as they like the idea or thought of it but not actually doing it.

I was apprehensive about IFS when I go my first one 9 years ago but I am sold on it. I keep my trucks fairly stock and I am mnot into lifts and big tires anymore. If I was maybe I would feel different but I do not miss the the torque whip/bind of Ujoints in a steering axle at all. I am glad to be rid of it.
