Ford builds a fine truck, for the most part. i'm not familiar with the "outlaw" pkg but the 5.o liter was a good engine. it's only real "minus" was that they were not known for low end torque, which is desirable in a truck. The single best thing you can do to that truck is re gear it. Don't get carried away with huge tires and you'll have a great wheeler! Deep gears and tires matched to your type of offroading is the key to a good time here. That 5.0 will do fine for ya as long as don't try runnin' 44" boggers with only 3.55 gears! then you'll be cryin' "boo-freakin-hoo...i need a 460 with a big stupid holley carb!"

yea i was wantin to put a little bigger tire but i was lookin to go to a 33" bfg mt and i was wondering what all else i can do besides regearing it. i found a power chip for it and im gonna put it on there but what else can i do to squeeze a little here and there i no its not a big motor and i no its not gonna put out huge numbers id just like to get a decent amount out of it.

Regearing is the best way to boost performance. No chip or tune is going to fix a bad axle ratio/tire size combo and anyone that tells you it will is blowing smoke at you. A 302 is a good motor but has limited torque because of its limited displacement and short stroke. Proper gearing will let it wind up some a deliver its power to load much better.

As long as you keep tire size reasonable for axles and chassis (33's would be okay) and properly regear axles, it should serve you well but if you go into this thinking you can get by without regearing it you are going to have problems down the road and be disappointed in it and think you need a bigger motor when you just need better gears.

and what other things could i add or upgrade to the motor or truck to make it perform better and ideas? i got regearing it but what else can i do.. im talking to trail blazers right now and getting an idea of gears and stuff and a few other places so i can find prices and stuff but what else can o do to squeeze power out. or just make it better overall. and are there any like flaws that come up in these trucks or recalls i dont no what you call them.

With 33 I would say 4.56's would wake it up a good bit. Do not let numbers scare you as 4.56 is not a deep gear with 33's and you should have OD as well which will really tame in in top gear. Before you worry about performance upgrade, regear truck as after you do it you will think you had a engine transplant. HP is a function of torque and RPM and with deepr gears not only does your engine have a greater mechanical advantage over load (tires) but it will also be turning faster which mean you will have more HP available at any given speed than you do now. You will not be disappointed.

but like right now it runs on anywhere from 29-31s i have to look its at my buddys right now and it doesnt seem to have much power now. why is it that now it seems to be under powerd or slugish. with what i have on it now wat could improve on it because this is almost completely stock they couldnt of add had to be regear just to start out being underpowerd. i no i dont no alot about cars and power and gears but im going to school for it all now trying to learn the best i can.i mean im just looking right now for power i can get without tearing into the axles unless i have to yet. cuz the guy who had it befor me just had them replaced to stock under a year ago and then it just sat they have under 100 miles on them. the whole trucks been sittin for i dont no how many years after being rebuilt 3 years ago.

Trucks of that model and year were geared pretty tall to try to boost fleet MPG average on EPA tests and they were kinda sluggish before you even put bigger tire on them which made it even worse. They were geared more like cars than trucks. Before the EPA/CAFA MPG day they used to put decent gears in them from factory and they ran well. Then they put tall gears in them and made then slugs and then they added OD to the tall gears and made them bigger slugs. Deeper gears restores the proper balance and will make a world of difference! Think of them (deeper gears)as using a bigger longer pry bar to move a load. The effort you put in on a longer bar does a lot more work past fulcrum and same with effort from engine input to axles with deeper gears.

alright, so i should go for 4.56 gears? and what will this do while i still have the smaller tires. is there any certain type of gear manifactor i should go for or any certain setup i should be going for.

With your current tires it will not be too bad because you have you should have a OD tranny. As far as gear brand, you can get them on line. Yukon is good as is Motive and Precision. Some other are not too bad but I tend to stay away from Richmond as they tend to be a bit noisy. You can get a cheaper set for front axle if your cutting corners because if it is a bit noisy you will not really hear it but the rear one you drive with so get a decent one there.

alright thanks the only other question i have is it has alot of play in the steering wheel what can i do to fix that they say the gear box is bad but even if i replace it i will still most likely have same amount of play or maby just a little less.
