Tommorrow i will take possesion of my first jeep, 89 xj with 33's and im guessing 4 inch lift, some nice custom bumpers, it has a 4.2 out of a 90 wrangler with a 4.0 head that is fuel injected, auto trans, runs good lights up 33's. What axels and gear ratio's came under these? And what trans/t-case is the common one for this year. Ill post some pics tommorrow.

BA 10/5 (Peugot) 5-speed manual transmission (89 was the last year) or a ax-15 AW-4 auto
the t-case could be a 231 or 242. theres a round red metal tag on the rear of the t-case that will have the model # stamped in it
the front axle will be a dana 30 the rear could be a d44, or more likely a d35 3.55's on the autos... 3.07's with the manual.

As above but likely a 231 tcase as 242 was not really used in that model.

I've done many swaps from the 229,231 to the 242 which I obtain from wrecking yards, there are many xj's that have em.

Sorry I missed that it was a XJ. They could indeed have a optional 242.

It is also a cherokee limited, has power everything and leather seats. My plans right now are going to be, 4.11 gears, remove the sway bar, tranny cooler, lunchbox locker in the rear. In a few hours i have become a jeep guy. Wednesday will be my first wheeling adventure in it, cant wait, i will take some good pictures. Is this tranny and t-case stout, any big problems i should worry about or address imediately.

a limited, so... it has the automatic? you'll need 4.88 gears to turn the 33's effectively for the best power and economy.
with the ax15 4.56's are ok
with 4.10's it'll still be as guttless as a 4 banger, kill the tranny and work the crud out of the engine. the tranny and t-case are both good units otherwise.
can't wait to see pics, hope ya have some fun!

this is my daily driver, and im afraid to go to a 4.88, because i dont want to turn 3000 or more rpm to go 75-80 mph. I wasnt sure the options with a limited, was hoping it might have posi's, but im sure thats wishfull thinking.

Actually I would go the other way around here. 4.88 with stick and 4.56 with auto. The automatic has about a 2.75 first gear plus a a little over 2x stall on converter so you have about 6 x multiplication at start out. With AX15 first is 4 to 1 and there is no multiplication when you ride/slip clutch (other then making more heat) and deeper gear will reduce average clutch torque and heat.

I was thinking the aw4 had a .69OD ratio.. it's actually .75, the ax-15 has a .79 ratio which is kinda pushing it with 4.88's that why I always go for the 4.56/33" combo on the standard personaly I do prefer the 4.88's on both standard and auto, and the 4.88/33" with the aw-4 auto.
4.88's turn 3000rpms @ 80mph.. the 4.0 almost needs to, to get it to go and maintain that speed with the big wide rubber. the 4.0 has a very hard time running 70+mph speeds with the large tires unless it's turning 2500 or more, a slight hill makes em drop a gear cause yer foot is nearly on the floor.
the 4.10's leave ya at 2000rpms @65mph. to coax it to go faster it'll drop a gear and rev up to 2700rpms then it'll hold the speed untill it goes back to 4th gear. the 4.0 likes to run @2500 to 4500rpm
at least seriously look into 4.56's if ya don't belive in the 4.88's
you'll be extremely disapointed with the 4.10's and 33's I hated driving my rubi on the hwy untill i stuffed in 4.88's, It also got better mileage running in third gear than it did running 2000rpms with the stock 4.10's and 33" rubber.
